Stock Preamp Location

I have decided to start making preperations for my Subwoofer and need to know where the Preamp is located for my 2003 Ford Ranger FX4--it has a 6 CD Disc Changer if that helps anything. I am sure there is one, and all I need is a confirmation before I get to deep into this project.

Its on the back of the stock head unit right? So all I need to do is pull out the Head Unit, plug it my wire in, connect that into my Amp and go from there right?

I am looking for the Audio-Out port of the Stereo system, and it didnt say anything about it in my Owners Manual.

Thanks in advance. . .

There is no external factory amp on an FX4. It's in the head unit. If you want to use an external amp with it, you will need a line output converter unless your amp will accept speaker level inputs.

Alright, fair enough.

A little something like this might be the fix?

I am guessing the route most go is getting an After Market Head Unit, which has a RCA output on it?

Youll get a cleaner sound with a aftermarket headunit rather than a line out conv.

I suppose thats true, the stock head unit is decent - but I will look into a after market head unit, because I really dont want to go halfway, so its either all or nothing, by that I mean a $300 color LCD or just use the little converter for now.

-Thanks-

If you want to retain the factory head unit and avoid the LOC, look for an amp that will accept speaker level inputs. My Roc-Fos amp has provisions for either preamp RCA inputs or speaker level inputs from the factory HU.

i had the converter on my stock head unit before i went aftermarket and there was a big difference. if you are putting a bigger amp in your truck then it will actually rob a little bit of your speakers. plus, aftermarket sounds a whole lot clearer.

these converters can be found at your local radio shack if you decide to head that route.
