Upgrading my system

I'm looking into upgrading my trucks system. Thanks to rolla_guy for pointing out woofersetc.com with low prices I have discovered a cheap way to do so. What I'm looking at is either the 8" or 10" L5 with a Kenwood 8152 amp. Then I got to looking at how I would wire it up and it says that a 1 ohm load is best, however the 8152 isn't 1 ohm capable, so I would have to do 4 ohm...which only puts out 300w @ 4 ohm according to the specs. So i'm lost as to how the kickers would sound in my single cab and if the Kenwood will work. Someone help.

you dont have to get a kenwood, look into a mono class D amp, i dont know if the kenwood is or not, but class D is more efficient and alot of the ones ive looked at can go to 1ohm, but not all

the kenwood is a mono class D. The reason it caight my eye is that its $175 on that website, and it is capable of 1100 watts. I can get the links to the L5s and the Kenwood if you need them.

ok. scratch if the kenwood will work. if i get the 4 ohm sub, i can wire it to two ohms, which the kenwood can handle. now, can you tell me how the L5 would sound?

The actual specs on that amp is as follows:
300 watts RMS @ 4 ohms
550 watts RMS @ 2 ohms

1100 is MAX power (which basically means nothing substantial and is mostly marketing)

Get this amp for < 100 bucks, and it'll give you 800 watts @ 2 ohms (12.5 volts)

or hell,
this xtant has 500 watts rms @ 4 ohms, and 1000 @ 1 ohm.

Xtant used to be better than MTX till lately, when they started putting cardboard IN the amps...

MTX is mass produced stuff, but whatever.

i wouldnt get that kenwood amp. I use to have it and it would always overheat.

ive had a total of 3 different kenwood amps... 2 of them overheated.. the one that didnt had a big cooling fan that you can actually see on the top.

as far as sub amps go, hifonics has seemed to be a very quality, mid-cost amplifier that has really no complaints...

Boss is one of those small up-annd-coming companies that probably doesn't have very much R&D money.

Hifonics was a really kickass American-made amp until a couple years ago when DEI bought them and half of industry. Now they are all made in some Asian coundtry and shipped back here. Don't get me wrong, they are really good amps, still... just not American-made anymore.

Similar story with RF, they were kickass hand-made amps back in the 90s and only up until recently with the death of Mr. Rockford Fosgate (not sure of his name, the original founder of the company). Now they are mass-produced amps, and the R&D has gone down the drain. All of the awesome technology that RF amps are chock full of now has been there since the early-late 90s.

And the new 20kW amp was developed back in the mid-90s by a couple of guys that knew something about Defibrilators (the device they shock your heart with).

I'm still not sure about what kind of amp I want to use, but I'm leaning towards Eclipse, 1) because I found on that will suit my needs and 2) because the price was within my budget. Another bonus is that it uses the relatively new ICEpower ClassD amplifier.

That's what it all mainly comes down to--> Whatever will fit your budget and do what you need it to. Brand is mostly preference.

Cardboard in the amplifiers? Really I don't care if this is true or not. They're a solid company and the one amp I found on e-bay should suffice. Don't call it unilateral name brand endorsement.

Also mass produced doesn't mean it's bad. You'd rather it be soldered by hand? I guess what I really mean to ask, is what specifically can you say from personal experience to go against the two amplifiers I linked? What kind of audio do you run in your truck?

I had a Boss Rev-685, this was back in 2000. It was a 2 channel amp and I used it to power two audiobahn 10' aw1000x subs. It said 12000 watts but the specs were 220 rms per channel. It sound very well, was very clear and served it's purpose. A bought it barely used from a friend back then. Never had one singel problem with it, It still works very well to this day although I dont have it hooked up anymore. I would say it's a good, well made inexpensive amp (that's different than cheap).

Did I bash any of those companies? No. I just presented my opinion. And I have seen with my eyes, cardboard air ducting in an Xtant amp. What I meant by better was "higher quality"... sorry for the confusion.

Now, to tell the truth. I think that most/all the audio crap you can buy in stores is crap. If I owned an audio company, nobody would be selling my stuff except me.

With amps saying 1100 watts peak, 1200 watts max. from companies like Sony or Kenwood. It is what I like to call ILS power. If Lightning Strikes!...............lol
