Adhesive For Emblems?
Adhesive For Emblems?
Hey im planning on takeing the emblems off of my 99 4x4 ranger xlt. I am going to take the side ones off and put on emblems from a ranger that was made in the late 80s I think. I found the emblems on a ranger in the junkyard. I am going to prime and paint them black. My only problem is I dont know where or what kind of adhesive to get.
Any ideas?
Thanks

+1 for 3M but they make more than one kind. If you can find it, go for the better stuff called Scotch-Mount Super Strength Molding Tape, P/N #03614. A really great product but about double the price - $6 a roll.
Of course, you must degrease and remove the wax for any molding tape to work well.
It is gray and only about 1/32" thick. Applying it slightly back from the edge is what OE manufacturers do to keep it from being noticeable.

Bugs have nads!?..with tar!?....jk i know it was a typo but like Bob said youll need to swab the area with rubbing alcohol to make sure its clean. Use Goo Gone or bug and tar remover or anything else that gets the sticky adhesive stuff off and then wipe the area clean with rubbing alcohol with some type of low lint cloth. I dont think its even that critical of a cleaning job to be honest because if you use the right tape that people recommended above its a very strong water proof adhesive that wont go anywhere.
ok problem!!!
I went and got everything yall told me to get. No problem there.
I then sanded the emblems
primed them
painted them
but about three coats of paint on
they dried....
I pick up the freshly painted emblem and rub my nail on it to see if it can hold up to some scratches... and all the paint peels off!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what now!!?!?!?!
did I use the wrong paint? grrr
Does anyone have a link to those 06 ford emblems? lol Becuase I dont think Ill be able to do this...

Assuming that they are plastic emblems, use a paint formulated specifically for plastic. Sand any gloss thoroughly, clean with paint prep, then shoot with adhesion promoter shortly before the first coat of color. Apply light coats and allow the correct interval between coats as directed in the instructions. Heavy coats or inadequate time between coats will prevent the paint from curing properly. Allow to dry overnight (at least) before handling.
If the emblems are chrome plated metal, it is not likely that you will have good adhesion after painting over them.
