I think I blew it

Cleaned the engine over the weekend and made the mistake from what I've heard of spraying down the engine with a basic cleaner, But the engine was still hot and now I have "soap stains? on my valve covers that makes them look like the paints gone. It really looks like ***t. Is there some "miracle" way to reverse this result?
Thanks guys/gals

I always love the simple green but the purple power works great also.

Anytime I clean my engine I use Engine Degreaser that comes in a white can with an orange top. not sure of the actual brand name.

Are you valve covers painted or polished?? If they are polished, a good metal polish will take the spots right out. If they are painted, get a good automotive cleaning polish. If you have a napa or carquest close, pick up a bottle of Duragloss 101.

I think they are painted(black). I'm beginning to think I've removed the paint because of the marbled plastic look they now have. I'll try the duragloss 101 and cross my fingers.

What exactly was the basic cleaner you used? If it was a mild degreaser, like Simple Green, the spots should be removable. If you used an engine degreaser or cleaner, the spots are likely permanent, since those are pretty hard on paints.

I used a product called Bam. Heard it was a good cleaner.

If it is the Easy Off Bam, the spots may be permanent. That stuff uses an acid.
