was just cleanin up the truck and decided to take out my filter.. its a cone filter and i've been running it for a while without any protection, but i was wondering if theres anything like around the house you could use to clean the filter without buying the cleaning kit, was just trying to avoid going out and buying it, and i know it needed to be oiled or something..

any advice would help!

 

Well buddy, you probably ruined it and will have to buy a new one all together. That shows you to half do something. Also you should give your engine to Kendall, would be a good idea.

well i did for a couple days.. but it kept stalling..? JUST KIDDING!! i just took it off now to try and clean it.

 

the kit says you can clean it with a mild detergent but says you have to use the kandn oil on it

 

the cleaning kit isnt that much money. Mine was like $11 and it lasts a really long time. So I'd just go get it.

How many miles have you run the filter since it was last cleaned/new?

The recommendation it cleaning every 15k. If you offroad a lot you should do it more often.

well i just ended up goign to the store to look for just the oil. but they didn't have it soi bought the whole kit and cleaned her out pretty good..

even ended up doing the panty hose mod!

but bob i would have been embarassed for you to see my filter lol.. field runnin isn't as fun when you find burrs in your air filterafterwards

 

well im pretty sure were gonna have to buy a lift to get it off your desk...and prolly get someone with a bulldozer to knock out the wall so we can get it out of the house....ummmm or we could just pull my truck in your room so we dont have to move the engine so far. let me know buddy.

man, we pulled a bird (well, MOST of a bird) out of the K&N filter in my dads 7.3 diesel. ive pretty much seen it all

 

How much oil do ya'll put on the filter?

 

I need to buy a kit....I've just used the air compressor to clean it off, mine looks brand new, I got right before fall (Sep.,Nov.)

 

engouh to color the filter, but not too much, i usually spray it so the color covers, then let it sit a few hours and look for white patches, and touch it up. the biggest problem with this design filter is that if you use too much oil, it could damage your MAF

 

Ya..thats what im scared of, but yet i dont want any dirt in my motor. I cant even get the filter out without taking the whole intake out!

This is NOT K&N's recommendation. Here's the cleaning instructions from K&N's home page:

Note that No. 12 says "Service every 50,000 -100,000 miles on street driven applications. . .Service often in off-road or heavy dust conditions"

I oil only the side that the incoming air hits, to help keep oil from getting to the MAF. And be sure to not over oil. The K&N instructions tell you how to determine how much oil to put on your particular filter.

 

Use a vacum on it...the special tube you can detach with some sort of a brush like head on the end. You'll still have to use the oils on it, but it might be a little easier.

 

i think i might have put too much on an damaged my MAF.... its been feeling sluggish since then, and thats the only thing i could think of that had done it, it wasn't exactly dripping wet when i put it back on, but it hadn't been sitting for "hours" like bob said he did it.. what can i use to clean the maf, im sure this would be a good start in place of replacing the whole thing.. it might not even be this but its what i could think of as to whats been makin my truck act funny

 

I stuck it on the end of a shop vac after oiling it. I don't know if it helped but I figured it would suck out the extra oil before the truck does. I did the same thing to speed up the drying after I washed it.

 

i dont think that would help me now :P it isn't wet with oil now, its probably all over my MAF now.

 

They make a bonified maf cleaner now if you can find it. Most people suggest an electronics cleaner from Radio Shack.
