2001 2.3 Rear main seal replacement

I'm getting an oil leak between my engine and transmission, which I suspect is my rear main seal. I have a 2001 2.3 2wd. I've searched the internet for instructions on replacing the rear main seal but haven't found any info on the 2.3 duratec. I've heard conflicting info on if the oil pan needs to be dropped, or just the transmission. Could anyone help me out and give me some basic instructions? Is this a doable project in my garage for a Saturday?

Yes, doable on a Saturday
Do need to drop the transmission, but not the oil pan

Good read here: https://www.therangerstation.com/for...rience.163028/

The 2.3l Duratec is a 2.3l Mazda L engine, Google: How to install a rear main seal 2004 mazda 3s 2.3l

So first thing, there is no way to replace the rear main seal without removing the transmission (or I suppose you could pull the motor-not recommended for this). If you have a manual (maybe an automatic too) you can get under it and look at where the bell housing meets the block. There are a few vents up the sides and one at dead center of the bottom. If your oil is coming from there and nowhere else you likely have your source. That said TAKE CAUTION. I rebuilt my motor and replaced the rear main and it never sealed and I am now going to have to replace it again, so be sure you do your due diligence before replacement. I did check local shops and they ranged $650-$900. There are also a few snake oil treatments that people swear by you could try depending how you feel about those things.

I'm doing this now to my 2003. Good luck, please post tips and lessons learned that weren't covered here or in the vids shared.

BTW On my 2003, and I think on Chuck's 2001.... the EGR is best (only?) serviced when the tranny is out.
