2001 Ford Ranger 2.3L, Manual Trans. HVAC stuck in defrost and rough idle

So, my HVAC is defaulting to defrost only. It idles rough, so I know there is a vac leak in the system. I have checked the vac ball on the passenger wheel cover and cleaned it and inspected for cracks...none. I found a break in the line from the vac ball to the firewall and fixed it with a rubber line. I checked the lines from the intake to the ball, they seem fine, checked the line from the intake to the brake control...seemed fine. Checked the connections behind the glove box to the Mode door....seems fine. It switches from heat to AC fine, but my fan speed control only works in max now and it will not switch from defrost to dash to floor. I had removed the radio a while back and found the control box behind the radio that has the plastic lever on it and was able to switch the air flow from defrost to floor and dash with a stick, but the little plastic lever eventually broke. Any answers to where I should look or parts I should check to find out why the air flow will not switch from defrost and to fix my vac leak idle problem?
