Using 2.3 Duratec in another vehicle - need help!

I'm planning on using a 2003 2.3L Duratec in a 1961 Rambler American. The initial plan is to use the Ranger wiring harness and transfer the engine, harness, and five speed auto to the older car. While removing the harness I've discovered that this thing could have been packaged MUCH better!! I'm going to be deleting the anti-lock brakes, PATS, and some other things. I've already talked to a company that will reprogram the ECU to delete those. All I really need is engine and transmission control.

I ordered a wiring diagram and have looked through a 2003 Ranger Service manual. One thing I can't find mention of is some sort of controller on the right kick panel, near the roll-over safety switch. Any idea what that is?

I don't expect to get a lot of answers, but it's worth a try! This is in a single cab, plain-Jane truck. It has AC, PS, PB, and an AM/FM radio, but that's about all.

We are just about finishing up with a similar project. We put a 2.3 2007 Ranger engine in a 1935 car. The 2.3 was also from a base truck. The only other control box we saw on the truck was the air bag controller. We did not use that and we did not have to make any changes to the wiring or ECU to delete it. We only had PATS, evap sensor and rear O2 sensor turned off in the ECU. We are using the manual 5 speed transmission from the 2007 Ranger, so no transmission control required.

Driver_WT, I'd like to know how you did it then! The other controller is the GEM (General Electronic Module). It's on the right kick panel. Maybe they cleaned the wiring up in later models? What I have is a big messy bundle, so I wouldn't doubt it! I thought I'd be able to just pull the Ranger harness and lay it in the Rambler as I did a late 90s Jeep harness in another Rambler (4.0L w/AW4 auto trans), but it's just too much!

The 2007 Ranger 2.3 ECU has 3 connectors which match up with the three connectors on the engine harness - so we used the ECU and connected it to the three connectors on the engine harness.

There are two large connectors on left side of the engine which are part of the engine wiring harness (C110 and C133 maybe - I am not near my project or the Ranger Wiring Diagram book). Some of the wires in these connectors go to the fuel pump relay, clutch position switch, etc. So we ran wires from those two connectors to the other components such as fuel pump. These two connectors are part of the engine harness and connect the other components to the ECU.

We are using a GPS speedo plus electric gauges with their own sensors for oil pressure, coolant temp, voltage and fuel tank level.

We did not use the Battery Junction Box, instead, we made up our own relay panel with individual relays for the fuel pump, electric radiator fan, starter relay, etc. We wired the starter up via the ignition switch and wired in the clutch safety switch.

So we have the ECU, engine harness, the two large connectors on the left side in the engine compartment under the steering shaft, and the relay panel that we made up. The engine wiring harness also had wires going to the O2 sensors and the VSS.

We spent many hours with the Ranger Wiring Diagram manual trying to understand what had to be wired up and how it would be wired up, especially since we were not using the Battery Junction box.

Yeah, sounds like Ford changed nearly all the wiring between 2003 and 2007. Oh well, I only paid $500 for the wrecked 2003 Ranger, so I can't complain too much! I have a Ford factory wiring diagram coming. Was supposed to be here yesterday from FedEx (two day delivery from Bishko), but FedEx has no idea where it's at today! So much for working on the harness this weekend... unless by some chance it comes today!
Snowing out though.. in mid South Carolina! Supposed to get 3-6", I doubt FedEx will even run today,,, if they even know where the package is!

I purchased the 2003 Ford wiring diagram book. Pin-out for C-110, the main engine connector, worked out great. Then I started looking for the under hood to inside cab connector, C-144. Couldn't find it in the connector diagrams. This made me suspicious -- did I have a real early 2003 with 2002 connector and it was changed for 2003, or did I have a very late 2003 with a changed for 2004 connector? Hmmm... let's check the VIN!

Turns out I have a 2006, not a 2003!! It was advertised as a 2003 for sale for parts (hit in side hard, then rolled at least once down a ditch bank), so I never thought to check ant further. Stupid mistake!

Anyway, I chickened out on modifying the wiring harness myself. I think I could do it, now that I have the correct info, but I have to send the ECM for reprogramming anyway. So I'm saving myself time by spending $300-400 to have Mars "stand-alone" the harness. I called and spoke to "John" about it. They don't normally do standard 2.3L harnesses, just Eco-Boost, but he saw no reason they shouldn't be able to. I'm sending the under hood harness, PCM, detailed letter of what I'm doing, and threw in the pin-outs of the two connectors and the Ford circuit number list I made from the 2003 wiring diagram as well.

Photos of the Ranger when I picked it up

And where the engine is going...
