Worth a couple of intake mods?

Worth a couple of intake mods?



I plan on making a box to sheild the cone from the heat; bent and bolted out of diamond plate from work.

Thinking of wrapping the intake tube with something like this:


And using intake tubing from pepboys to create a ram air from behind the grille to the cone.

And maybe get the k&n drycharger..

any recommendations?

basiclly I am bored..

Dont use diamond plate.. it gets too hot, and will ambiently heat the air an awful lot.. I would recommend using a clear acrylic style glass or something similar... something that is thick and can take a hit from a stray rock or sloshing mud.

You will get the same performance improvement do to wallet weight reduction if you send me the money you spent on the K&N intake!

You obviously aren't aware that your OEM airfilter / airbox is the same used for the 3.0L and 4.0L V-6's, which will flow way more air than your 2.3L will ever pull!!

would home depot have this?

I spent like $65? maybe $75.. idk it was used from a fellow ranger owner on this fourm before you were even a member.. not bad as I love the sound..

and removed this "growth"

Give er' as long as your having fun, and it does seem like a fun project. That heat wrap for the intake tubing works great

Honestly I doubt you will see/feel any difference at all doing either of those.

IMO I'd spend the money elsewhere.

I dont know what it is about people hating on the K&N intakes, i have that exact same one and i am happy with it, i dont think any more hp but i used to get a bad bog when i got into it, now thats gone. Keep in mind my intake is paired with a free flow muffler so i may get more performance. I always hear people talking about it will screw up your motor, no it will not mine is fine, if your going to offroad the truck get a outerwears cover for the airfilter. Even then you dont really need it. Everyone is always *****ing about how things dont give you any performance well its YOUR truck you can personalize it however if thats what someone wants to do then let them to do unless its something totally crazy.

During closed loop (partial throttle driving) you truck will compensate for the loss of intake resistance to maintain stoichiometric mixture (14.7) - this will help your mileage. But if you want any real gains you should retune your truck with a new intake. The open loop tune (full throttle) dosent look at the output sensors, so this will make you run leaner than the truck is designed for. This is probably safe because no doubt the stock tune is like 10:1 at WOT. You should retune it somewhere between 10.5 and 11.5 (11.0 is probably very safe and will generate the most power.) However heat wrapping it after the MAF will give the ecu the wrong intake temperature, beacuse its being cooled after its measured. Once again closed loop will compensate, but the computer will be saying "WTF" - Open loop this may make you run even leaner (cooler air is more dense).. so I don't know. I myself always tune after my mods: for example I have a huge open K&N intake filter and a big 3.5" intercooler, thats why I dyno tuned my car to 11.5 AFR for optimum power, I also monitor the AFR with a wideband that I also can log my pulls on my laptop.

Totally wrong! The only thing the K&N intake will do is slow the air velocity, causing the MAF to measure less airflow than is actually flowing! The stock intake and filter isn't what limits the airflow, it's the intake runners behind the throttle plate, and the engine.

where did you get a k&n air intake to fit your truck. i have a 94 ranger 2.3 liter and i cant find an air intake for it.
