back up and your hub will unlock and you wont have this problem i have a manual tcase too and if i dont push the clutch in and let the input to the tcase stop then it stays in 4wd till i push in the clutch so back up should solve your problem

No hubs on that year, unit bearings.

Check your linkage on the tcase itself, something's not disengaging.

He says the 4wd light goes out. I'd check out the linkage first.

yah i tried backing up several times... the shifter itself is reaaaaly stiff, and it binds like crazy if i turn... nothing worse than hearing that damn snapping sound knowing your almost breakign your truck, i have a feeling its a crapy linkage or the unit itself needs to be servive and overhauld. is there any threads on redoing your manual xfercase?

Take off the front shaft so you can at least drive it.

Try changing the fluid. You probably got water in the case. Especially if you are driving in stuff as deep as what is in your avatar.

Does it do this ALL the time? I ask, b/c if you're driving around on solid turf you can bind up the drivetrain, not allowing it to go out of 4wd until it unbinds itself.
Stupid question but I hope you're not testing it in a parking lot or something....

Check the bolts that hold the linkage to the transmission extension housing. The smaller bolt adjusts the angle of the linkage and if its out of whack it will cause the shifter to bind. I've heard of them loosening on ppl before so that would be a good starting point. If its not loose it might just need to be adjusted, could've got jarred by something and knocked out of place.
