1998 ranger 4r44e no reverse but reverse band not broken

Searched for days on this and all im finding is the reverse band is broken,
what i have is a 98 3.0 rnager 4x4 4r44e 160k miles, the other day i put it in reverse as normal and it acted like it went to neutral, i have since changed the filter, and checked the reverse servo it wasnt broken or the oring werent damaged i put a screw driver through the hole and the reverse band had tension, i have talked to a few tranny shops they all want to do a complete rebuild if any of you all have had or heard of these symptoms please help the only other thing i noticed is the 4x4 lo and hi flash 5 times when u first start it but it has had manual hubs installed other than that not lights of any kind please help

It could also be the direct clutch, or the low/reverse one way (? i dont have my 5r55e book at home) could be stripped. The 4x4 lights flashing are most likely not related to the reverse engagement

yeah thats what the tranny shops are sayin, the only other thing i noticed i had dad put it in gear while the pan was off there was oil coming from the spring where the reverse solenoid attaches, i want some opinions should i jus let the shops do a rebuild some ppl say it may be the transfer case
