4.88 gear ratio? Please help.

Hello! I have an 03 ranger v6 3.0 manual transmission and re-geared it with 4.88. I now have 35" mud terrain tires on it with a 5.5" lift with a 2.5" spindle lift. I have noticed I am getting really poor gas mileage and a drop in acceleration. Prior to having this work done i had stock gear ratio with the same lift and 33" tires. I was wondering if i change back to some all-terrain 33" tires with the 4.88 gear ratio will i get back some of the gas mileage and or some acceleration?

So you have a large lift, 35" mud terrains and you are concerned because your gas mileage has dropped? I'm reading that right aren't I? lol
What kind of mileage? I would say dropping down to 33s with 4.88s might make the mileage worse, but I'm not sure. My 05 sport trac 4x4 4.0L auto with 33s and 4.88s got a solid 14mpg, even with a yakima basket and spare tire on the roof. Pretty good, considering, if you ask me. I bet it would have been slightly better with a bigger tire to bring the RPMs down some on the freeway.

im running a 4.88 w/ 32" tires now and its unbelievable on the freeway, going from a 4.10 to a 4.88 killed any efficiency on the highway, allowing me to go only 100kph @ 2600 until i notice overspeed of my driveline. its important to watch the rpm's at higher speeds. the city drive is ok for me, accleration and everything is awesome, but the truck would run much better with larger tires as it would give a bit more top end.

if you do alot more city then highway a smaller tire would do you good, added acceleration for sure, and even some effeciency may be noticeable. its all about finding a happy medium..

Note: This is all with a 4.0 SOHC manual trans....

I went from 4.10's and 35's with approx avg mpg of 13. In went the 4.88's and 35's and I bumped up to about 16-17 mpg average with mixed driving. On the highway is where mine shines.....19-21 average pulling 3000rpms at 75-80mph in 5th. This particular motor LOVES it some rpm's.

Gear the damn thing....you're 2wd(obviously), so you only got one axle to pay for. Just do it.

If you haven't compensated your speedo/odometer for the bigger tires, then your mileage is probably much better than you think...

They do around here when gas gets above 3 dollars a gallon. I just fill up at before a quarter tank so I don't have to deal with it lol

I normally fill up at half but I ran pretty low the other day.

Anyway, Cory I guess I don't understand how you figure you are getting terrible mileage when you don't even know what kind of mileage you are getting... And like Patrick said, I have to wonder if you have corrected you speedometer/odometer for the gears and tires.

I was clear on E the one day, pumped 95$ in fuel then walked in and paid with $100 bill. No questions asked.

I don't know why some places have limits. I had the same issue when I pulled the trailer across the country with the sport trac and gas was nearly $5 per gallon. If it was for cash it would be more understandable. I guess they probably pre-authorize the card for $75 only so it stops there, who knows.

I don't think I have paid cash for gas since I was 16. lol

First off get the speed-o reset.
If the milage is still below 14-16 then look for other things like tuneup, air pressure in the tire.
Also the floor board is not meant to be a gas pedal stop point, ease off a little and let the little truck get up to speed slowly, no quarter mile runs off of the on-ramp.

The 4.88 w/ 35” tire should be good with a 4.0, you will see higher rpms on the highway then with 4.56 gears but the difference should be that dramatic.
