Would that be a bad combination? Reason i want 4.88 is i might fall into a lift kit soon. Then i would want to run 35" tires. thought i would start collecting parts. BTW it is a DD.

 

How much highway driving do you do? 4.88 is a pretty low gear. If you do a lot of hihghwat driving I might not get those gears. They would be great with the 33's but it really depends on were and how you drive.

 

I think with a 4.56, youd be fine with 33s and 35's.

 

go 4.56's. with the 4.0L SOHC you don't need the extra gearing to get going. Now with my 3.0L I'd need the 4.88's for the 35's. with 4.56's and 33's you still turn higher RPMS but not as bad as the 4.88's.

 

are you automatic or manual. Manual and 33s you'd be pretty much fine with sticking to 4.10s. Automatic you might go 4.56, even with 35s. Rangerboy03lvl2 went with 4.88s on his supercharged manual trans 03 Level II and said if he had to do it again he'd gone with the 4.56s. I have no problem turning my 33s with 4.10s, but I'm also a manual transmission, which is geared differently than the automatics.

 

Yeah if your just doing 33s and not thinking about 35s I'd say go as low as 4.30s. But since your going to go to 35s defn. 4.56s.

 

4.30s i believe would be ideal, but from what I understand there are no 4.30s that will fit our differentials, or at least the d35 and the 8.8 31 spline I have.

 

According to this site (http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html) and if you have a auto trans then at 65 mph you will be running at about 2435 rpms with the 285's you have now.

 

his things off by a little bit but not much.. im not turning 3g at 70 im at 3g probably around 75-80

im thinking about dropping to 34s or 33s next so we'll see what happens lol
i'll probably keep the 4.88s

 

that will be WAY too much gear for those tires........4.56's are a good combo with an auto transmission........for 33's 4.10s....

 

I have 33's and 4.10's it gets up and goes fine, but if you travel alot daily I would keep it as low as possible. I drive atleast 60 miles round trip daily and the 4.10s are killing me on gas mileage.

 

I also have 33's and 4.10s. Does good in the city and is great on the Hwy.

that will be WAY too much gear with a manual trans and 33's.....4.10's are perfect for 33's and a lot of people have had great success running the 4.10's with 35's and a manual tranny.......

i think Bill (04lvl2) was getting around 16+ mpg on the highway with 35's, 4.10's, and a manual tranny....

 

i do a lot of city. so i get great milage w/ 4.56 and 31's (22ish). its a low ratio i know, but it was either that or stock 3.73 (from mechanic). highway is horrible. 3000 @ 70mph. i plan on bumping up to 35's soon.

basically, you need to look at which kind of driving you do. highway vs city and IF you tow anything.

4.88s are still too high for me IMO, i wish i had done 5.13s

In the slick stuff it will be near impossible to keep traction in the rear. I have 33's and 4.56's and a cap (extra weight helps). It blows in the snow and in the rain it can get swirly. Of course my locker worsens those conditions but 4.88's will be way too much. Oh yeah BTW I have an auto tranny.
