Will your carrier hold 4.88s?? What gear do you have now??

I'd jump on it now. You may not need them RIGHT now but what if you go to a larger tire later on and need them then you would already have it taken care of.

I honestly think it'll make a 3.0 fun. Do it, put 'em in when the 33's go on.

50 in 5th at 4,000 rpm. lol. Not practical, 4.56's would be better though and 33's. 4.30 would be perfect for 32's. If you plan on running 35's or 33's, it might be wise to go ahead and grab the 4.88's.

Whats your current gear ratio? stock tire size?

I ran 4.88s with 33's on my sport trac (4.0L auto) and it was fine. 4.56 would have been more ideal, but they worked well in Oregon where the freeway speed limit was 55-65. It was great around town, awesome off road, and manageable on the highway. But I don't think the 3.0L likes to rev like the 4.0L sohc.

My advice is get them if you plan on 33s (unless you spend a lot of time over 70mph). Definitely get them if you plan on 35s. However, the install is really the expensive part so cheap gears really aren't that big of a factor if you ask me.

Edit: I just noticed that you have a 2wd, I probably wouldn't go with 4.88s unless you are planning on going with 35s.

Wow, thanks for all of the responses. I can pick up the entire axle with a fresh set of 4.88's on it. The axle housing is trashed but the gears are good. I could probably reuse some of the other parts off the axle as well. All this for $100.

Would I have to take the gears to a shop and get them installed? Or could I just pop in the new ones? BTW, I currently have 3.73s, and those suck with 32s lol.

I can barely hold at 90 with 3.73s before it downshifts! Lol
