4wd swap questions.

Ok guys I'm going to do the 4wd swap.

Outdoorsman is selling me like 75% of what i need: axle, knuckles, spindles, brakes, driveshaft etc etc.

I need to know what I have to do relating to the trans.

I'm going to get a 1354 manual shift tcase so I want to know if I should just get a 4wd trans or one of my buddies at work said just the "tail cone"?

whats the easiest way?

The trans will need a complete rebuild. You'll have to replace the tailhousing and the output shaft, which requires a complete teardown. Remember the tailhousing youll need is pretty rare. Itll have to have the OSS hole along with the manual case shifter bosses.

If you are an automatic, if you convert to 4x4 trans, the threads and the OSS should be there if your new tailhousing or new trans is a 01+ trans.

If manual....good freakin' luck finding that damn tailhousing. Took me 2 years of hardcore searching to find mine.

If it were me, I would. No downtime on the truck except for the swap itself. No waiting on the trans to be done. Plus, you can probably do it for not much more than the money for the rear shaft and tailhousing swap. I have a nice history of getting low mile parts for cheap...maybe you'll ahve the same luck with that trans. Check out 0RangerEdge2's 4x4 conversion thread.

I believe 01+ on 3.0. I know it's definately 01+ for 4.0...just a little unsure on the 3.0. The speed sensor is in the tailhousing.

Check out Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market They're how I found my engine.

EDIT: Did a quick search in Arizona. In pheonix, Precision Auto Parts is listing a 7,000 mile 3.0L 4x4 trans from a '03 for only $600.
