7.5 - 8.8 conversion

If I wanted to put an 8.8 axle in my truck, what exactly is involved? What i would like to do, is take out my current pumpkin, axle and set that aside, and put in an 8.8 LS including axles... so basically a whole new rear end... what am i looking at as far as cost? and will i need a new drive shaft?

Depends on what 8.8 your going to install. Are you going to install one from a ranger or explorer. If it's from a ranger it's a straight bolt in, if you go with an explorer you have to flip the spring perches. As far as the driveshaft it should stay the same. I don't know how much your looking at and also you would have to make sure the gearing is the same or you would have to change that also. Hope this helps.

Nothing. Your truck came from the factory with an 8.8 axle.

no i think is 7.5 its the xlt valu pkg with no LS. I was kinda leaning torwards the explorer, since itll have the disc brakes in the rear.,.... I have a connection with a distributor who deals exclusively with junkyards so i can get major parts fairly cheap.

I dont wanna mess with the pumpkin at all tho, thats the thing, i want a pretty much straight swap... so if anything goes wrong i can tow it home and either fix it or swap back my old one. the big thing here tho, is i dont want t be messing with the pumpkin,

You cant really take the pumpkin apart from the axle tubes, if thats what your implying. You have to take an entire new axle and put it under the truck. Check your door jamb for your axle code.

As far as swapping a explorer 8.8, you would need new spring perches, shock mounts, and make sure all the brakes are intact otherwise you will be buying those too.

If you're not sure, post a picture of the axle so we can see it.

Or, just look at the tag on one of the diff cover bolts.

But yeah, I've never seen any 4L Ranger with a 7.5 axle.

The only Rangers that had the 7.5 in 2004 were the 2.3 and 3.0 2WD coil spring trucks. All others were 8.8.
