'97 Borg Warner 1354 Yoke

I didn't see any specific information on this, well... nothing that I could gather a sure answer from, but anyway.

97 Ranger 4x4 V6 4.0L.

I broke the front yoke attached to the transfer case. I haven't been able to find anything that specifically said which yoke I need to replace it. From all the information I have gathered, I have the Borg Warner 1354 electric transfer case. I'm not sure how to verify this completely - just going by what I have seen listed for different year ranges. I found a place that could get me a new one, but they needed to know the spline count on it, which brings me to the 'physical' problem.

As many of you have probably seen, the space between the head of the bolt holding the yoke on, and the surrounding wall, is not very big. Getting a socket in to attempt to remove it is tight. I tried shaving a bit off the outer diameter of the socket to try and get it in all the way, but still no luck. (I didn't shave off so much that it would affect the integrity of the socket itself.)

So, any tips on getting it off? If I can do that, I could find a replacement. Or, anyplace the documents which yoke would be needed? I would imagine it would be standard across all of these particular transfer cases, but I could be wrong.

Any direction from those who have dealt with this would be greattttttly appreciated! Trying to get this thing cookin again!

hmm... reckon ya need a rental/borrow a car and drop the t-case.

Or partially drop the t-case and transmission and then remove the yoke, count splines (write that number down...) and put it back together to go get the new yoke.

Kinda like when I was pulling the exhaust off yesterday... had to take the damn spare tire carrier out in order to be able to pull the rear section... "Aw poopy, that interferes with that and I gotta take that out to remove that." Welcome to the 90's. Don't get anything newer, it'll be worse, lol.

Sounds like its time for a junkyard trip. Ranger, Expo and B2 should all have that same front output.

Yeah, that's the plan, but part of the issue. I can't get the yoke off. Not sure what size socket I need. I have a 29mm, but it seems like it may be too small. Shaved a bit off the outside to make it 'thinner', but still a tight fit. I think I saw someplace mention a 30mm thin wall, but I'm not sure. If I can get it off, I could count the splines and get a new one.

I'm also surprised there isn't a universal part number for this yoke. If it is on a 1354 BW electric, I'd think they would all be the same?

Now... really trying to see what socket I need to get it off, then I can order one, junkyard, whatever.

Thanks guys!

Oh, also, I'd seen that a lot of Explorers and Broncos had the same one, so I'd hunt that down at the junkyard.

This Ranger is a play vehicle, so I can get around to find parts... once I can figure out what I need :-)

Well, I ordered a 30mm thin wall, deep well 1/2 drive socket. I'll soak it with some liquid wrench for a while then see if it will come off. Everything else should be a breeze after that.
