Icon8 I killed my trans

well today when I was leave school the o/d off light started flashing and soon after the truck started shifting wired and upshifting when it shouldn't. By the time I got home it wouldn't shift past second gear, It shifts really hard from first to second. At one point for a couple miles it wouldnt get very high in rpms and wouldn't go any faster then 70mph, the motor acted like I was trying to pull something really heavy.

So I'm thinking that means the trans is dead and I need to know what vehicles I can get a trans from that will be a direct swap in to my truck.

I would hold off on the trans swap. It could just be something wrong with the computer that controls the trans. You could see if there is any codes on the computer (sounds like there is with the o/d light flashing).

ok I just drove it to the car wash because it was covered in mud. It shifted through all the gears and the o/d off light wasn't flashing or on. Ok its hard to explain what its doing but ill try. Now it seems like its holding the clutch in to long so the motor revs for a sec then it kinda just slips in to gear.

well the thing is it has slowly been getting worse

SouthernMudSlinger: well the thing is it has slowly been getting worse over time and then it all of a sudden was really bad and now its a little better but doenst feel like its going to last long. I have been having problems with reverse for at least 4 months, In the mornings or when the truck has been setting long enough to cool down I cant get it to go in to reverse unless I rev the motor to around 2k rpm then it will slip in to gear or sometimes it pops in to gear and sqeaks the tires.

It sounds like it is going out to me. Kind of the same signs when mine went out on my first one.

Mine totally lost 2nd gear and would shift from 1st to 3rd. I had the o/d light flashing thing too and sometimes it wouldn't go unless I really gave it some gas. I would start looking around if I was you.

I think its like 173XXX miles.

Edit: I dont think the fluid has ever been changed though so I may try that first. I no it could kill it but I might as well try....

Its done good to make it to 173k miles. Oh, and changing your fluid isn't going to kill your trans...besides, you dont have anything to lose, but at this point, its probably too late...its probably worn out anyways if its never been rebuilt or replaced before.

Not trying to be bashing on you schatten789 , but could you please make an effort to write in some form of readable English? It would make your post that much more worth reading, and that much more credible.

Cheers bud. Sucks about the tranny.

a friend is getting me a carfax report from his aunt in about a week. So I will see if it has had any thing happen to it, but as far as I know it is the original and never rebuilt. I dont know if it is the original fluid but I do know the fluid in it is burnt. I was told by a mechanic and a couple other people that if you dont change your fluid after so many miles then when you do it could hurt the trans more then it helps.

Hey, I had a similar problem a month or so ago. My truck is driving fine. I had the fluid changed less than $100, and they guy boosted the oil pressure or something. Drives great now. and, next time your truck has problems like that happen, its prolly not a good idea to drive it 79mph. i pulled over, shut it off, started it back up and It was a bit better.

It could have been your speed sensor (got mud in it maybe?). I know when mine was disconnected it would rev real high then slam into gear.

My dads f150 did the EXACT same thing your tranny is doing right now. It lasted for about a year of doing that before it finally bit the dust. Had he had it serviced and fixed when it started he could have saved himself a full rebuild on his tranny, however he didn't and wound up having his complete tranny overhauled.

Thanks for the info guys. Ill try to get the fluid and filter changed and talk to the mechanic about it. If that doesn't fix it then ill take it in to get rebuilt or what ever it needs.

My first trans lasted till about 108k before it lost reverse. At that mileage a complete rebuild is needed. Fluid changes may by you some time or my kill the trans. Its a gamble with that amount of neglect.

Trans shops near me quoted about 2500 for the to do all the work. 1400 if i brought in the trans.

My advise would be try and get a another job and hopefully you can get the cash before it dies. If you can handle pulling it yourself you may be able to get by with a junkyard trans.

well I work for my dad as a DJ assistant so I like this job, I get to go to all the parties.lol I get paid well to its just all the jobs are on the weekend because my dad works another job during the week. I just found out that my dad is doing a complete sound system install in a church so, I should get some big bucks from that. I will get another job if it comes down to it.

I dont have to tools to pull the trans my self. You think it would be cheaper to get a junkyard trans with 30k and below miles and have than swapped in rather then a rebuild?

A jy trans should be cheaper than this. This is on the very low end for a rebuild tho. I have not heard good or bad about them. You can rebuild this trans for about 100-200 less than this if you had the tools.

FYI, its a PITA. Air tools help a lot esp on pulling the exhaust and trans mounts.

I tweaked a disc in my low back fighting with this. I'm really on the fence about swapping one again only reason being is, I now have a trans jack.

Ah the good ole days. 16yrs old, no money, and a broken tranny. Been there done that! Except back then I lived off of 16oz glass bottles of mountian dew and doritos. (only one flavor of doritos back in those days) Now-a-days you punks drink sooped up energy drinks, have ear rings, tatoos, and eat tacos at 2am. Anyway..

Here is what I suggest.. and do it in this order:

1) Save every penny you can. You'll need $1500-ish
2) Beg/borrow some garage space for a week and a good assortment of hand tools.
3) Get a used tranny w/less than 50k on it. (pay $1200 max)
4) Buy or rent a tranny lift. (looks like a floor jack)
5) Have a friend or family friend whos actually R&R'ed a auto tranny before help you. Your broke and he knows it. Be kind to him and be willing to do all the wrenching with his guidance. Buy him pizza or a dinner for his experienced oversight.

*don'ts*
1) Don't get a high milage tranny
2) Don't have newb friends hanging around while doing this. Only ones who have actually done it themselves.
3) Don't start this until you have the money, the tools, and the place to get it done in no more than 1 weeks time. If you plan this good it could be done in one day.

Im not sure if I really want to do it my self, I MAY be able to do it with a friends help but the only friend I no that could help told me its alot of work and he hates messing with them and I should take it to a shop. I think it would be best if I took it to a shop anyway.

I will try to get the fluid changed sometime with in the next week and see if it helps if not then I guess ill be borrowing my parents extra car for a wile.

Thanks for the help guys, If I did get a used trans what year rangers will work on my truck?

first you got to find out what model tranny you have and if its a 4 speed auto or 5 speed auto. I know the auto behind my 3.0 in my 98 is a 4 speed.

Also get a real job if you want to fix this, working with the dad may be cool but obviously its not making any money to swap a tranny in so its looks like its time for the real world for you and no more living off mommy and daddy and working for a real company not your dad.

Dude, throw a bottle or two of Lucas's trans slip when you replace the fluid, Not only I, but lucas gaurantees to stop or minimize the slippage. Beleive me I know what you are going through, I had to have my trans rebuilt with only 40,000 miles on it ($1800 for the rebuild and a shift kit). Good luck
