Differential rubbing noise while turning
Differential rubbing noise while turning
Hello, I recently replaced bearings and races on my 1992 2.3l 2wd m5od ford ranger. After doing this the initial whine was fixed but now I have a sort of metal rubbing but not really a grinding noise that happens when I turn right and dont touch the gas. This was my first time touching the internals of a differential so Im pretty confident the noise is my fault. The noise is consistent with wheel speed but only occurs at a certain point in the wheels rotation. I did measure pinion prelod and backlash but I dont think thats related.
I suspect one of the wheel bearings I installed, its worth noting that I used the one peice bearings that include the seal. Also I broke one of the seals trying to install so I got a different one from orileys and Im pretty sure it was a “repair bearing” which I am unfamiliar with.
Any help to steer me in the right direction is greatly appreciated thank you.

I dont think so, I checked both drums for obvious irregular wear marks and didnt see anything. Also I couldnt seem to replicate the noise while spinning the wheels by hand. And no changes when braking or with parking brake engaged.
