I'm replacing my LF hub/bearing unit and according to what my Chilton's guide says I need to replace the hub nut. I've looked everywhere and haven't been able to find a part number for it and the part store peeps have been useless.

Does anyone have a part number I can reference? I only know that its a 32mm nut.

The trucks an '02 Fx4 if that makes a difference.

 

I don't know the size or part number but I understand the manual saying to replace them as a liability issue more then a mechanical one.
In a perfect world you would think a new one would come with the wheel bearing if it was really all that important.
I can't tell you it is ok to use the old one again, only that I do, I will inspect it to see if the threads have stretched but I remember back when I was doing my apprenticeship as a machinist, the books says 50 % internal threads of a nut will strip a 70% thread on a bolt of similar material. With that logic it seems the manual would require the replacement of the axle not the nut. I am sure the material that the axle and nut are made of would be different.
I would go ahead and use it torque it to spec and worry about getting a new one later. Thats just my opinion!

 

Thanks for the response. I was thinking a long those same lines, just install the old one and hope I have no problems. The parts guy at napa told me pretty much the same thing, and that the nut usually comes with the new CV. I was just hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

 

Did you try the dealership?

 

if the threads arent damaged id re- use it, i always re- use mine. if its torqued to the proper spec during re-installation it wont come off. (162 FT LBs)

 

I re-used mine as well. Had them off a couple times on the sport trac.

 

I'm trying to avoid the dealership, but I'm probably gonna just reuse it. I was just hoping to get a part number so I don't have to. Thanks for the replies everyone

 

I meant that if you'd talk to them they would probably be able to get you a part number.

 

Don't forget to clean the threads on the nut and the axle, and use blue Loctite for some extra insurance.. Same thing for your brake caliper bracket mounting bolts.
