Drivetrain play Videos

I decided to make videos of the play in my drivetrain to see what ya'll think about it. The truck has 146,000 miles on it, and the play is a bit annoying. You can be crusing like 30mph under slight load, and you can feel gears (im going to say the rear end) bouncing off one tooth and hitting the other, just on and on, under the right conditions. And if you try to creep along at say 5mph or so, if your on flat ground, it will just start jerking back and forth.

Here is a video with the tranny in neutral with the rear tires on the ground.

This one is with the tranny in 1st gear.

And finally, this one is with the tranny in first gear, and one tire off the ground while the other is on the ground.

if anything it could be something in the gear lash, but seriously mine does most of that as well and that does not seem out of the ordinary.

If I remember right, your truck has around 80k miles on it, so that doesn't say alot, yours could be worn too. Another thing is that you have an automatic, so naturally your not going to feel all the play cause the engine and drivetrain isn't connected solid like mine is. My brother had a 2000 Ranger with 40k miles on it, and I never remembered feeling any jerking or anything......shifting was smooth......nice and tight. Im just trying do determine if practically all the jerking is comming from the rear end (seems like it).

Yes but I had a 92 with 130k miles on it, I4 2.3L, manual trans....

Its going to have some play. And the axles are all the same setup, they all work the same, whether it is an auto or a manual trans.

As far as I am concerned the play in the wheel that you showed in the video is fine. And the driveshaft play is not that bad either.

What type of noises are you hearing?

Basically just the clunking noise of the gear teeth hitting each other from all the backlash.

lol.......I just want to get rid of the play......its driving me crazy. I'll be buying a new clutch sooner than expected if this doesn't stop because I have to slip the clutch a little sometimes in between gears so it doesn't jerk. Im just wondering if it would be cheaper just to swap out the whole axle from a ranger with low miles in a junkyard, rather than swap the gears and all the spiders and stuff, cause they might be warn too, plus the labor to have the gears put in, if I can't do it myself up at the tech school im at now.

Well I would say you doing the axle swap would be allot cheaper than paying someone to rebuild your rear end.

wouldnt a spring under application work great for your truck? if so explorer axle would be better.

I wish my explorer axle had 3.73s in it so that it would be more of a direct swap for you.

i just checked my manual, 4.0, 4x4 with about 35000 and if i leave it in gear when it's parked there is no play in the drive shaft but if i hit the parking break and pop the truck out of gear i have about the same play as you maybe just a little less. i hope this helps.

Explorer axle.

I think the backlash is messed up. My 7.5 was doing the same thing...even my 8.8 does it!!!

I have a flip kit on my truck, so the axle is on top of the spring. What gears does your explorer axle have? I thought about doing 4.11 gears.....

So your saying the explorer axles don't have the backlash, and that the ranger axles are messed up?

Well all axles have "backlash". It's a setting used when setting up the gears. There is no difference between the expo and ranger axle gears besides for spline count (of axle shafts).

I have the same problem as you, so does kevoo, so does fordneck. It's a ford, just wait until it breaks

I was saying for you to get an expo axle b/c it has rear disks, 4.10's, and LS. All the way around better, it's fully bolt on too!!!

Mine also has a lot of play in it. I figured that was how it was supposed to be since the truck isnt that old and has low miles!

i can get a quote if you would like. I am sure I can find a crate around here somewhere.

You do know what is involved? Some welding for shock tabs, Ubolts will be needed but I have some that may work for you. So spring plates and then something for the Ebrake.

I am not saying you need to buy mine, honestly i would look around where you live and see if you can find one that is in good shape.

Mine wasn't too bad to ship from TX. I believe a little over 150...I can't recall exactly how much though.

BTW, Kyle if you read this, that axle is still holding up awesome! It's been through hell and back, but it's runnin like a champ!

nah, I guess not, the way jrpro130 said it, it sound like the ranger axle is crap and the explorer axle is good. lol I just think its got alot of play in it. My brother drove it awhile back and noticed it and said the rear end or something is worn or something like that. He said his wasn't anything like it........I just need to drive a brand new ranger with a manual to see how it is, and then i'll know for sure. I know theres suppost to be some backlash, but this just seems like way more than it should be.
