95-02? are the ones to look for. not sure what year went to irs. but 95+ has disk, and you'll have to check the tag for gear ratio and l/s. not all have l/s. I just sold the axle you are looking for a week ago. it came out of a 99 Limited, v6 4wd

There is a sticker in the drivers door jam that tells you what rear axle it has. You'd have to bring the list of what the letters mean in terms of gear ratio and l/s, but it beats having to crawl on the ground. Little trick i learned because i'm old and hate getting dirty, lol.

95-01 Explorer, up to 05 Explorer Sport and Sport Trac. All have discs. Variables are, of course, gear ratios and limited slip or open. Not all are 4.10, not all are LS.... I don't think I've seen a 4x4 Sport Trac that wasn't 4.10. Like said above, print out the code sheet over at TheRangerStation.com and check that door jamb sticker or the axle tag.

02 Explorer was the first year for IRS.

a good majority of them did... I pulled mine out of a '95 that was 4x4... had 4.10s and l/s...

95-01 Explorers and 2001-2005 Sport Tracs.
I haven't seen a lot of explorers with 4.10s myself, but they are definitely out there obviously. They are more common in the sport trac (2001-2005) which is the same axle, although I have seen a few sport tracs with 3.73s as well. Either way, both models in those years will be a 31 spline 8.8 with discs, you'll just have to check the tag on the diff. Should read something like " 8.8 3 L 73 "

when the tag on the diff says 3L73 the L stands for traction lock. this may be a stupid question, but is that the same as L/S (limited slip) or is that something different? and if it is the same does that mean the 4.10s will say 4L10?

Ya, it just means it has L/S. Your right, the one you will be looking for says 4L10
