Fluids

At what point should you change fluids like transmission, diffs. etc? at what mileage point? im at 40,300 right now and as far as i know the only fluid thats been changed is the oil.

Ford claims 100,000 mil but i never trusted that

did all mine at 50k... better safe than sorry i always say

yep

rangerboy101 12-12-2008 09:41 PM

ok thanks. i just wanted to make sure i wasnt behind on any of this stuff.

Silver 12-12-2008 09:41 PM

your ahead of the game

rangerboy101 12-12-2008 09:55 PM

thats all that matters then.

Silver 12-12-2008 09:57 PM

yep

good fluids cover 50% of problems any one runs across

rangerboy101 12-12-2008 10:01 PM

yeah. speaking of fluids and everything thing... right now im runnin castrol synthetic but the next time my oil needs changed i really want to do royal purple cause thats originally what i was goin to get but autozone only had castrol and i was in desp. need of oil. but do you think it would be a good idea to switch to rp or just stick with the castrol?

Silver 12-12-2008 10:06 PM

im running purple in the diff, good stuff, but i have all ways run the dino oil in the motor and as long as you keep on top of any fluid any one should be able to get the max of the component its lubricating for its max life

04blackedge 12-12-2008 10:09 PM

I personally think RP is a waste of money on our trucks, Castrol or Mobil 1 will be fine.

true that too but i got a good deal and still a good product so im happy

but i still stand by my statement as long as you keep on top of the fluids they will pay off

04blackedge 12-12-2008 10:24 PM

Oh I'm talking about motor oil, I'm going to run RP in my diff as well, either RP or Lucas. I agree with your statement.

Silver 12-12-2008 10:26 PM

still a nasty smell when you change it lol

04blackedge 12-12-2008 10:27 PM

I haven't done it yet lol, I've heard its nasty though

how many miles u got now?

04blackedge 12-12-2008 10:36 PM

74k

Silver 12-12-2008 10:39 PM

dame its time to change that lol

heck i only got 2k more than you and only 26k on the dif fluid

04blackedge 12-12-2008 10:46 PM

Yeah I've owned it since 54k and they said they replaced all the fluids before I got it. Its due for a change soon anyway, maybe over break. I wanted to get a new diff cover first though.

thats what tried but the new diff cover cracked and leaked so i just cleaned the old one up and ran with it

that would be my suggestion but give the sealant time to set, depending on the cover selected.

04blackedge 12-12-2008 11:09 PM

Yeah I was young and naive, that was before this site lol. Just haven't had the chance to do it yet

Silver 12-12-2008 11:13 PM

its back to my original post and fords 100k deal lol

heck i replace my plugs at least once a year due to the 4th 5th and 6th cylinders eating up plugs like candy but thats a ignition coil deal

PW01 12-14-2008 07:04 PM

Over-kill maybe, but I change the fluid in the tranny, diffs, and transfer case every 30,000 miles

bwester04 12-14-2008 07:28 PM

When I had my 2000, I changed the tranny fluid when I did the slave cyl. at 44k miles, differential fluid at 80k miles for the first time (smelt putrid when I cracked it open!), oil was every 3,000 miles with motorcraft syn. blend- good stuff. I miss the easy maintenence of a Ranger!

Ford04Ranger4.0 12-14-2008 07:33 PM

Remember when you use synthetic dont go back to regular
