Just got my 8.8 back today. He pulled the 5.71's out and put back in 3.73's. He said to put some Ford Limited Slip oil in it and then the rest with gear oil? Is one of those little bottles enough? I got one at ford today and Im putting the axle in tommarow! Also what gear oil do you guys recomend?

Kevin, did you get a sniff of it yet? I picked up a case and the whole way home I was smelling my under arms thinking- PEW! I STINK! lol. It turned out to be that additive. It smells like 7 days without a shower (not that I'd know what that smells like).

I heard a story about a Ford tech that spilled a bottle of the LS additive in a Ranger interior, the dealer ended up having to replace almost the entire interior, they couldn't get the stink out.

Something to keep in mind: the purpose of the LS additive is to make the gear lube "slippier" so that the clutch packs don't grab as much. Which means that the less additive that you use, the better your limited slip rearend is going to work. You want to use only enough of the additive to get rid of any "chatter" that you may experience making turns on dry pavement.

I need to rebuild mine. When I bought my truck some dumbass had a 245-75-16 passenger rear tire and a 245-70-16 driver rear tire. Needless to say the clutches in mine are worn out. That really pisses me off. Just FYI, my brother rebuilds alot of these traction loc unit on the mustangs. From the factory in the diff you have seven disks on each side, 3 clutch disks and 4 shims. What we did on my mustang is kept the best looking clutch disk and made it 4 clutch disks and 3 shims. Just in case somebody was looking to make theirs a little tighter.

The Ford Shop manual reads:

"Use Hypoid Gear Lubricant E0AZ-19580-AA (ESP-M2C154-A) or equivalent."
and
"Add 4 ounces of friction modifier C8AZ-19B456-A (EST-M2C118-A) or equivalent for
complete fill of Traction-Lok rear axles".

The Motorcraft part number for this additive is XL-3.

GM dealers also have an equivalent, Part number: 1052358, (If you can't find the Ford additive).

There are also several after market limited slip additives out there available at both performance shops and most auto parts stores, just make sure to match up the military spec number to be certain you have the same stuff.
Also keep in mind that this additive is required only for clutch type differentials, and is listed as for use with non synthetic gear lube only.

There are synthetic lubes available as well that are limited slip rated as is and do not require the additive, but if your dealing with used clutches, I think I would stay with the standard lube and the additive. I did have a chatter problem with a used 8.8 rear that I had refilled with a synthetic limited slip fluid, I ended up changing the fluid back to cure the problem.

Any Quick lube shop will have the right stuff, (i used to work at one) 75w-140 syn. rear fluid is wut i put in mine. if u use the synthetic fluid there no need to add the additive.
