Front gears & locker?

Hey everyone, the time is getting close to complete the 4WD, but I have a few questions for the front axle in my truck (82 Waggy 44).

I'm going to be regearing to 5.13's (just like the rear) and I'm also looking for a locker.

I drive my truck daily, but I do want to have fun off-road and not have to worry about 1 tire up front spinning instead of 2. I need a locker that can hold up to the street and off the road. But I also don't want to pay an arm and a leg for an air locker. Any suggestions?

And for gears, I have Yukons in the rear, but does it really matter with brands of gears? Master install kit needed as well?

Brenton

always get a master install kit when replacing gears.....brand of gears doesn't matter....Genuine, Superior, Yukon, etc.

any locker will handle street use IF you have manual hubs upfront and they are unlocked.....if the hubs are unlocked, then the locker NEVER comes into play...

a full spool would make it almost impossible to turn off road.....spools are good for straight line only...

I agree with Beard. Unless you plan to really thrash it offroad a lunchbox locker should hold up just fine.

A lunchbox is your best bet for a locker. They're affordable and still pretty difficult to break. As far as gears, any brand should be alright. Definitely get the master install kit though.

ive heard a lot of bad things about genuine.

as for lunchbox lockers, with that big/HEAVY of a tire I would opt for another option. just to give an Idea, most lunchbox lockers are only warratied up to 33 inch tires. I would go full detroit personally...

I will not be running the 41's anymore, I have a set of 37's that I'm putting on Gil.

locker

I would recommend the Auburn Ected locker works great, less than an air locker, stronger than a lunchbox locker.

ECTEDs are lame. I wouldn't buy any carrier that will wear out and have to be sent back for a $125 rebuild.

BTW aussie locker states no limitations on tire size in their warranty.

They're the only aussie locker dealer in the US.

I was reading this on an item on Ebay...

"When installing this gear in a differential that was originally set up with 3.08 - 3.73 gears, a carrier is required $59.00 If you wish to retain your stock carrier a Thick gear set is a better choice."

So should I get a thick gear set or what? I'm confused!

D44s take 2 different types of carriers...

one that takes gear ratios 3.08 to 3.73
and
one that takes gear ratios 4.10s to 5.13s?

if your axle came with 3.54s then you have a carrier that can only support 3.08 to 3.73s unless you get THICK gears 4.10s to 5.13s or get a new carrier then you wont need thick gears....

hope that makes sense.

you should be fine with 37s, 41 inch military tires are HEAVY and thats the reason I would not run a lunchbox with them.

I still say full detroit.

thus why I said most lunchbox lockers.
