FX4 L2 axles......is the Torsen actually worth it?

Hi.

I'm curious on the locker that comes(or came) in the '02 FX4 and 03+ Level 2's. The torsen. Is it actually worth anything? I mean is it as worthless as a stock LS?? Or is it sweet like the duramax truck lockers.

Give me some info about this locker/ls whatever it is.

Thanks.

Shane

I have a torsen LS. It's gear driven, where as the tru-trac has clutches. It is suppose to be good for many miles to my understanding. I really like mine personally, works great.

Don't go with it. I hated it when I had it, before it blew up. I'd invest in a Traction- Loc if I were you, cheaper, easier to find, and a little more reliable.

i duno mine hasent blwon up yet, 35k miles and some decent wheeling miles too. its fairly agressive, meaning you can feel it on the street BUT it "unlocks" when its supposed to. and in the dirt i hardly notice only one wheel working. clutch ones are useless if you ask me, unless they are super tight, then its clost to a spool, and i dont like lockers ( the ratcheting type) a cable or air locker is *****en..

Look at L/S this way it's a glorified way of saying "it's still open." I went with it over a locker for my rebuild because the Ranger isn;t my trail rig, it's my DD and I don;t need more than L/S on the street.

Personally I'd rather see the money spent on a Trac-Loc for L/s, but thats just IMO

I've had both and I prefer the Torsen. All the Level 2s have them.
The clutch type L/S fades with time and is about worthless after 25k (or less), is completely open after 50k.

My buddy blew up 2 trac loks. One in a 94 the other in a 99. Both times he was doing burnouts.

After 75k they need attention, or they frag.

Maybe its was him, IDK. Id prefer a gear driven over clutch packs. Actually a locker over the l/s.

If memory serves me right there was also a TSB on some axles equipped with Torsen Limited Slip in 2002!

You're right about that. I think there was also a recall on some of those axles.

you have to ask yourself how much offraoding are you really honestly going to do. then figure out what you can tolerate in the noise/tire wear catagory on the street. and that will lead you to your traction adder that fits you.

Well the first time one of your back wheels is off the ground and you get stuck youll go gee , I wish i had a selectable locker .
My 96 dodge had a factory LS and it sucked , both times I got stuck was of it not throwing power to the traction wheel . But it was a clutch style I belive so a gear one might actually work .

Ummmm the Detroit True Trac does not have clutches. Im not sure where you got that info from. Its the same thing as the torsen except it has three helical gears instead of the torsens two.

Here's the deal....I'm solid axling my truck in the summer into fallish.....And I will be upgrading to a 31spline, as i have a 28 spline right now. I've found a 03 Level 2 at a local wrecking yard, and they want a fairly good price for the 8.8 31 spliner that's in the truck. 50k. When i do the sas, it will be getting a detroit....the torsen will be coming out anyway. I wasjust curious because there hasnt seemed to be much discussing on the torsen rear.

Ok...so my understanding is that it is a limited slip unit and using helical gears. Correct?

Shane,

If you aren't going to get a great deal on the l2 axle why not just get an explorer axle. then you will have disc brakes and it should end up being cheaper.

Can you find out if that truck is a manual trans? If it is and still has the trans I want (NEED) the extension housing!

BUT Ford denies it. I called 2 different service departments in the state and they both denied it... though I've found it and brought it to their attention

yup, early 2002 with the manual's... sending a shock load causing it to fracture and grenade. They avoided the auto since, well it's cheaper to cover the manuals

possibly....the extension housing on the 02 and 03 manual rangers have holes for the OSS sensor and the bolt holes for the manual shift linkage. Your 01 may have the linkage holes, but I believe it won't have the OSS sensor hole....

blue connector is the OSS sensor, holes next to it are for the manual t-case shift linkage.
