Does anyone know the gear ratio for my stock 1998 ranger 4.0? I looked at the rear Axel and it had 338M. does anyone know what that means.

Look at your door sticker. Tell is what it says under 'axle'.

Double fail for 3.55's and open diff. lol
FYI, the weight won't be the biggest problem, the wind resistance will!
When I pulled an enclosed trailer with my sport trac from Oregon to Kentucky, strong headwinds slowed me down and semi's were passing me. When there wasn't wind, I was passing semis up the mountains, no problem. I also had 4.88 gears and 33" tires.
My trailer was only 6' wide. The ranger is just not well suited to towing a travel trailer, unless it is a pop-up.
Look in your manual, it lists a maximum frontal area as well as weight. For good reason I found.

thanks, well i was looking at this travel trailer that was like a big pop-up, i look at the weight on it and its a little heaver then a popup and it folds down to a pop-up height for towing.its all hard around, the top half of it cranks down over the bottom half of it. it wouldn't be higher then my cab. i forgot the name but, i think i would be fine with something like that. that was one of the main problems i wanted to avoid. thanks for the advice though!
