How much is a 8.8 worth?

Ok, I have been emailing a dude that has an 8.8 axle from a 5.0 explorer. He says it has 4.11 gears and posi trac. Is it worth $150? That is what he wants for it if I remove it. I just sent him an email asking how many miles are on it. If I go look at it, anything I should pay special attention to?

Is it disc or drum rear? 05 and up is disc.....If it is disc, it is worth it. Jeep guys will buy those for 2-300 easily.

If it's drums, then maybe. Those are a dime a dozen...

I have an 8.8, open diff 3.73 gears. I think it MIGHT have a bent axle shaft. And I have almost everything for the drum brakes to go back together too, I think I'm missing maybe a self adjuster if anything. I'd let it go for 50 if you pick it up!

Never mind with it. The guy went out and looked it over again and he said it had been changed to 3.73 with limited slip. Its not what I am looking for so I guess i will keep looking. Thanks guys for your help with it.

Torsion bars started in 95 also. 94 was the last year of the gen 1 explorer. The SOHC was an option on trucks in 97. you could still get the OHV all the way up to 99 or so.

If the explorer is a 5.0 then it has to be a gen 2, which means it has disks brakes. 150 is a good deal for that axle. You know that it is spring under though and your truck is spring over correct?

150 for the tube and the LS is well worth it. Get gears installed. It would be pointless to upgrade and go to an open rear. Unless of course you are going to go with a locker. Then by all means keep on looking. But 150 is a good price.
