I know its not a ranger question but the explorer is pretty similar. I need advice on how to replace the starter on a 95-98 explorer 4.0 4x4. I know I probably need to drop the front drive axle, anything else I need to know to make the job easier??? Input is greatly appreciated.

you need to chill. bump is when somebody posts in the thread to bump it back to the top of the section.

and to answer your question if i remember right you dont have to remove anything. I think its 2 bolts, disconnect the wires. replace with new one. replace wires. I wanna say the bolts are like 13 or 14mm

Okay sorry about that. ranger dave im not understanding what your saying. you can not turn a wrench or get a socket on the upper bolt without taking the shaft out. outline me your way of doing it.

I know its a simple 20 min job on a ranger cuz theres nothing in the way, but not so with the exploder.

finger socket? unless thats a normal socket then no. I would appreciate that diagram bro.

One of my buddies whos a card carrying mechanic said that at work he puts um up on the lift and pulls the front shaft, proly cuz it saves time. I just looked at the haynes book and the pic show either a two wheel drive truck or a 4x4 with the front shaft out, cuz theres no front dif or 4x4 gear in the pic.

You guys are clearly not understanding my problem. All I need to know is HOW do you remove the upper mounting bolt!!! I cant get a wrench on it with any room to swing to break it loose, from either under the truck or above! I can do everything else no problem.

I'm pretty sure that you DON'T need to take the axle out. you can fit a small swivel head with short socket on there.
you can cheat it out. i've done it.
