Interchangable items from 28 spline to 31 spline

Here's the deal, my 28 spline is getting 4.56 gears along with the install kit in a few weeks. The guy doing it said he replaces all bearings and seals, etc.

BUT

Im getting a 31 spline with disk brakes later on this summer. So can the bearings/seals be transferred from the 28 to the 31 spline along with the 4.56 gears ok? Or am i going to have to buy a new install kit to swap the gears?

Thanks..

pinion bearing will transfer, but that is about it. pinion seal as well.

but its new shims and other stuff like that.

Ive always used the same pinion nut and crush sleeve, and normally just reuse the bearings but i have spares for when/if we mess one up on the press.

I'll just have him put the 4.56s in the 28 spline so i can have them for the dunes.

31 spline will have to wait a while.

I'd go the other way. Don't waste the money gearing the 28 spline if you're going to be getting a 31 spline soon.

Yeah but i'd rather have the 4.56s for the Silver Lake Sand Dunes trip.

Its not that bad really, just a new install kit. I'll wait to do the 31 spline this fall.

if the pinion bearing interchanges(i cant confirm, but beard says yes, and he has both), then id go ahead and set them up. 99% chance you wont hafta change anything when you swap them into the 31 spline housing.

Its my understanding that they will. They are both 8.8s

I will know 100% for sure this weekend as I'm installing the 31 spline.

are the 4.56s gears transferable to the 31 spline axle? i didnt think they were...

so why spend the money on a 28spline when you are upgrading to a 31spline?

the gear size doesn't matter......a 8.8 ring/pinion gear is the same, no matter the axle spline.....the axle spline only affects the carrier........

i could take my gears out of my 8.8 and put them in a '07 F-150 8.8.....they are all the same....

Im probably going to get a trans temp guage before the dunes, but still go ahead with the 4.56s.

Zach said his trans with 4.10s/35s last year was running around 200.

yea.....you should also get an external tranny cooler........i need to redo how mine goes from the tranny-->cooler-->radiator cooler to tranny-->radiator cooler-->cooler.....

i moved my tranny temp gauge sender unit to the little spot in the side of the tranny.....it reads more acurate temps there.....i haven't seen it above 150* since i did that...

Do these look right?

A-Pillar Mount

Trans Temp Guage

Now, i want the 2-guage mount pillar because i know i'll need another guage in the future (not saying which one Maurice shut up cause you know what it is, haha)

I need a 2 1/16 filler guage and could'nt find if on summits site or ebay, anyone help me out? I'd like it to match the trans temp guage if thats possible..
