Locker question.

This might sound dumb. But when purchasing a locker does the spline count on your axles matter. There is a guy on Pirate4x4.com who is willing to sell me his brand new not even out of the box Aussie locker for 310 shipped. Only thing is tho is that he was going to put it in his explorer 8.8.

Cheers
Chris

Yes it matters. Do you have an Explorer axle in your truck? If not you can't use it.

Yes it matters. The side gears of the locker mesh with the axles. A 31 spline locker will not work with a 28 spline axle.

On a side note, the real dumb part of your question is that the locker is only $259.99 brand new. lmao

Depends on the year. If it has a 31 spline rear end with the torsen limited slip (FX4 level 2) then it would work IF you bought a new (open) carrier and had it installed and re-setup the gears.

Short answer is no, it won't work.

Yes the locker is only 259.99 AMERICAN. What you forget is that once something comes across the Canadian border we get fisted in the A$$. and prices goes threw the roof. But i understand what you are saying. The Aussie locker here is going for almost $550. Also that is shipping from British Columbia. to New Brunswick One side of the country to the other.

I did not mean to sound like a dick. If i did i apologize. Just explaining how we get screwed over. It is for reasons like this I wish i lived in the states.

So what you are saying then is If I want to run this locker I need to get a new Carrier.

IF you have the 31 spline Torsen L/S, yes. Otherwise, get a different locker.

Look at the axle code on your door tag.

This will help. Put it in your favorites

If you have an FX4 like you said you do, you will have an 8.8 with 4.10 gears and a Limited Slip. The only thing i'm unsure about is spline count.

No prob. If anything, I figured if he is really into doing this that knowing axle info would be helpful.

Figure out what ya got yet?

No need to check any tags or codes. Every 2002 FX4 came from the factory with an 8.8" rear diff with 31 spline axles, Torsen limited slip and 4.10's.

Here is the thing. Unless Canadian Rangers are different, if you do have the 31 spline rear axle, it does have a torsen limited slip. Which means a new carrier like I said. Which means carrier + locker + labor (have to setup gears again).
The only real advantage to a lunchbox style locker like an Aussie is that you can install it in an open carrier without having to setup gears (basically it is cheap). If you have to buy and install a new carrier to run the aussie, it wouldn't be worth it anyway. At that point you might as well install a full locker like a detroit as it replaces the entire carrier and is probably stronger that way at the end of the day.

If you have a torsen limited slip, your money is probably better spent installing a front locker anyway, in my opinion.

I can not get a front locker for it. Can I ? and I know for a fact that I have a 31 spline because when I put the lift kit in I got the ubolts for a 28 and my truck was on stands for another 2 days before I could get the Ubolts needed to install the blocks in the back. lol. If I half to get a new carrier it is no big deal to me. I have a buddy who works works at the stealer ship who said he would help me put it in when I get it. He has done gears on his mustang as well as on a few of our buddy's trucks.

Aussie makes a locker for the front, but I hear it is discontinued now.
Lockrite still makes a front locker, basically same unit as the aussie.
http://www.richmondgear.com/powertrax/fordtrucklr.pdf Part # 2311S2 I believe
Although I guess it Caniduh you may not enjoy a front locker if you get lots of snow. Front lockers are a little awkward in the snow, in my experience.

If you're thinking about the aussie in the rear, compare prices with a detroit full carrier replacement locker. It may be more expensive, but its worth taking the time to compare.

SO I checked on Jegs.com and found a Detroit locker for the back it is $449.99 American so close to $520 Canadian ( geustimation). Plus the install kit which is like $150. I think I am going to be further ahead to just get the Aussie and a open carrier and go from there.

STOP. I have the same axle you've got. Ran into a gear swap problem using the torsen so luckily I had a open carrier on-hand so I could get the truck back on the road. If you're going through the trouble of putting in an open carrier, then a lunchbox locker, why not go to a all around better carrier PERIOD? If I could do it all over again, I'd go for a selectable locker(like an Ected or a e-locker), or an auto locker like a Detroit. Swapping carriers means you'll be out a gear setup. Who wants to do that for just a open carrier and throwing in an aussie?

The only upside I see is the ability to swap back to open by removing the aussie and throwing the spiders in it. In case the aussie decides to blow up on you and hopefully it doesn't take the carrier out with it. Aussie is only as strong as the carrier that it's in.

+1 however I'd just spend the extra $$ and get an e-locker, which I will be doing soon

I'm going Ected. Best of both worlds and best for me....LS when unlocked, spool when locked. But...gotta read the reviews first. I'm kinda tired of my aussie on the street. If my truck was auto, I wouldn't feel it back there. but it's not, and I feel it. lol.
