Locker: yes or no?

So, I've decided I definitely need a locker, but I havent decided exactly which one I want. It's either going to be an ARB air locker, or the Eaton E Locker. Does anyone have any experience with either of these? Do you think I might be going "overkill"? Any input is much appreciated. :biggthump

I have the E-locker. Works great, no complaints at all.

RangerMuse 03-30-2009 11:24 AM

Gotta buddy with the e locker he has had no problems and he is real hard on his rig just my 2 cents

whippersnapper02 03-30-2009 11:33 AM

ARB is good but you have to buy a compressor and run air lines. E locker is great as well. If you have a 2 8 spline axle then your only option is a Powertrax locker.

i like the air locker idea so you can run open diff on the highway

E locker is open when unlocked and Auburn ECTED is a L/S when off.

Downey 03-30-2009 11:49 AM

ok i didnt know that thanks. is the E locker and electric locker?

Fx4wannabe01 03-30-2009 11:52 AM

yes. uses a switch internally to 'lock' it. just like the ARB uses air to 'lock' it.

Downey 03-30-2009 11:54 AM

ok thanks shane i didnt know that see i learn new stuff on here everyday that might be a better investment then an aussie for my explorer axle

My91Ranger 03-30-2009 11:56 AM

Might want to check out OX Lockers as well if your set on a selectable locker. Its cable driven instead of electric or air. Fetches a pretty price, but is a nice unit.

BOBO 03-30-2009 12:04 PM

not to thread jack but what have ppl heard about the Auburn ECTED i like that it's L/S when not engaged. how durable are they and what not?

Downey 03-30-2009 12:13 PM

i just looked them up there sweet but not cheap

Fx4wannabe01 03-30-2009 12:23 PM

I can't wait to get some income...i love my Aussie...but it's sometimes VERY awkward with a manual. Always wanted an Ected or a e-locker.

Downey 03-30-2009 12:28 PM

you have an aussie in a 31 spine axle right shane

Fx4wannabe01 03-30-2009 12:33 PM

I have an aussie in a 31spline Fx4 Ranger axle....same axle but perches and shock tabs in the right places, and the tubes a little shorter than the expo.

99ranger4x4 03-30-2009 12:33 PM

I have a quick question about the selectable lockers thats always bothered me..

when engaged, weather it be the ARB or something else, is it like a spool? or does it still ratchet?

chainfire 03-30-2009 12:38 PM

As far as I know, it turns into a spool, otherwise, you might as well just use a LSD.

99ranger4x4 03-30-2009 12:41 PM

idk what I want to do..spools or slectable ones? haha if its a trail rig only i really don't need selectable lockers.

as to your origional question.. YES on the lockers, you have no idea how much of a difference they make until you actually do it.

chainfire 03-30-2009 12:50 PM

Spool rear, selectable front. Makes it easier on the arms.

But I think you already have a spool in the front, so thats out ahah.

99ranger4x4 03-30-2009 12:51 PM

haha yea
but as soon as i get a tow pig I'll be putting a ram on the axle so that should help ;)

Tys 4x4 FTW 03-30-2009 01:09 PM

does anybody have any links to these?
the limited slip in mine is great and all, but i bet it doesnt even compare to a locker.

99ranger4x4 03-30-2009 01:11 PM

it doesn't..
and a locker doesn't compare to a spool, but its a hell of a lot closer than a limited slip.

buckgnarly 03-30-2009 01:27 PM

ARB, E locker, and OX are all "spools" when locked. There is no "disengaging" (ratcheting) unless you break it or something else.

The Elocker comes in 28 spline, I used to have it.

The Ected is a glorified limited slip. It's never mechanically locked, just uses electric to HIGHLY load the clutch packs. You also have to pay them and send your old when when it needs to be rebuilt. Look up J Grigg's old posts for more info. I BELEIVE it's 150-200 to get it rebuilt. Probably don't need to rebuild it much, but it can wear out.

99ranger4x4 03-30-2009 01:31 PM

one of the lockers you can take apart and manually lock if need be.

the ARB you can run off an air tank/bubble or CO2 tank, no need for the compressor/relays/switches/wiring blah blah blah.. and someones going to say "no you can't" it happens everytime.

chainfire 03-30-2009 02:05 PM

Yeah but with the money you are going to spend on an air tank, and the lines, wouldn't it just make sense to get a compressor? A good one costs what, 350-400? Then you have unlimited air, and you can air up your tires however many times you want. Just my .02
