Can you change a lower ball joint on a 2002 xlt 4x4 ext can with out having to mess with torsion bars, like just place a Jack under arm and support it while you change the ball joint

the bars need to be unloaded to do it safely. not hard to do, just loosen the preload adjuster all the way out. then put a jack under the A arm pop the upper ball joint and lower the A arm. Then remove the knuckle and press the ball joint.

Just to make sure I have this right, count how many turns I back it off so I can put it back correct, I don't want to undo the bolt all the way, how do I know when I'm at the point where I have tension released enough, thank you

You don't have to touch torsion bars to do ball joints. Just take the knuckle off and press the ball joints out, and press the new one in. Simple.
