My 5r55e is done..I need ya'll's help

Okay guys..I have been having issues with my transmission since September and I finally have my money right to do something about it. THe short story of what happened..I heard a pretty bad clunk back in September and ever since I have had no reverse. All forward gears work fine, except I have no engine braking in low. I tried to change the low reverse seals and that helped none.

So its looking like I'm gonna have to pull the transmission. This is what I need advice on.

Should I:
1. Pull my transmission and have a full rebuild done?
or
2. Pull my transmission and just get a used transmission?
2a. Buy a remanufactured transmission or a jasper?

I would love to do a manual swap but I just don't think I have the knowledge or skills and I def. have no one willing to help me.

I am not sure if I'll be able to pull the trans myself but I'm gonna try thats for sure.

Thanks guys for the help! I haven't even been able to get up here lately because it just makes me that much more upset about my truck but hopefully she will be back up and running soon

1st off, dont get a jasper! they are trash. i would either have a reputable shop repair yours, or i would price put a new one from ford. i know that option isnt the cheapest but you wont be taking chances with a rebuild. ive had bad luck with rebuilds.

Manual swap! My thread on here tells you everything you need to know... and since you're a gen 4, you don't have the PATS issues or problems with computer stuff I ran into!

Thanks ya'll for the help for sure!

hahaha w/ three people I have three responses!! ahhhhh ahhaah
At least I can throw out the Jasper option..I didn't think much about that one but it was a thought.

Dern it I really wanna do a manual swap but I just feel like its more than I'm capable of. I found Maurice's thread about his swap but the pictures no worky lol. I'd really love to do a reman. but dern..thats about 2k...ahh haha.

Zach BTW..I really owe you a huge thanks man..those seals you told me about and showed me pictures about really looked like it was gonna do the trick. It was worth a shot for sure!

My trans did the same, I went with a used rebuilt unit off eel bay. The didn't use new gaskets or something because it just didn't shift right. Its got a stage 3 shift kit in it now, it shifts a little firmer than stock.

Anyway I think my trans had a sprag clutch go, it think yours is the same failure. No reverse no manual engine braking in first.

If you have the time pull it out and get it rebuilt. Or have a shop do it all if you have the cash. That way you can yell at someone local.

FWIW, I put about 10-15k on the truck with no reverse. Just had to be creative when parking.

I say if you really want a manual transmission, go for it. Do your research on here well before you start any work and ask lots of questions. Their are several people on the site that have done the swap and would be more than willing to help you with any questions you have.

I have increased the pressure in my trans with a tune and all runs well, but in stock form the transmission seems to be showing signs of slippage. I have heard rebuild kits costs only $300 but I don't beleive I have the know how to do it. How much would it cost to get it rebuilt by a shop if you pull the transmission yourself?

Lol we are in that one together man..I have been driving it since September with no reverse. The parking isn't that bad! Its just that I have been so spoiled by my garage..and now the cats outside have destroyed my truck. Something has to change. I think you are right..I think the sprag is what has gone in mine as well. From what I have read that can happen from going from drive to reverse without coming to a complete stop. I may have done that once or 500 times getting ready to back into my garage..but hasn't everyone? lol

I think I will have to pull it out myself. In order to get the shop I checked with said it would be 2k to pull it and rebuild it, and it would be about 1k to rebuild it if I pulled it and installed it.

This really has me thinking! I am gonna start doing more reading and research and see what I think about it. I am not someone to just jump into something..especially when we are talking this kind of time and money. I am confidant in my work, I just know this has to work. This is my beloved DD haha.

Mine has no slippage at all, but just simply no reverse. It goes into reverse gear fine, but it just doesn't have the umph to move it. Its like it has no strength. I am def. not confidant in tearing down my trans.
The shop said 1k for a rebuild if I pull it and install it.

I say just get it rebuilt. Pull it yourself and get the shop to rebuild it. If anything goes wrong with it it's on their bill not yours.

I went to AutoZone and bought a remanufactured 5R55E. Difference between Reman and Rebuilt is they replace everything in the tranmission, including the hard parts. I paid a little over $1700. When you pull your old one out take it back and you'll get $350 or so back for core. It also has a 3 year unlimited mile warranty.

Not a bad price^^^

But he already wants a 5spd... And taking into account you can do the swap for just under $1k, I think that's do-able!

No not at all for a reman. Basically a brand new trans in an old case. Oh, and it comes with a new TC.

Thats really not that bad at all man thanks for that info. That sounds like a pretty dern hefty warranty..I like the sound of that. Thats a good price!

I'm gonna look into each one of these options and make a decision.

I really appreciate the help and comments..its nice to get some good opinions instead of..."ohhh its just a dern ford..blah blah blah" haha

my 02 died at about 167K was in and out of the shop for year after the trans shop repaired it
I would bring it home drive for a few days and she would blow again there was a metal rubber seal
that kept blowing, Now the trans shop kept fixing it for free but it seemed to take longer and longer to get my truck back from them. The last time I got it back I sold it I see it arpound town and it is still going strong. I just did not want to chance it was tired of not being able to drive my truck.
Rebuild, Remanufacture wow this would be a tough call I would have to go Reman. knowing what i know now

Thanks man thats some good info for sure. Thats exactly what I'm worried about especially since I'm going to pull it and install it myself. I'm afraid they will try to say its my fault its not right. I really just don't know where to go. I gotta make up my mind though!
