its been rather cold where i live lately, and with the colder mornings have come issues with shifting gears in my manual 2001 ford ranger edge. normally shifting is a breeze with my hurst short throw shifter. but here lately i've had issues not only with getting it into gear but with shifting while driving as well. no grinding, just an extremely stiff shift like i have to force it into gears. trans fluid level is fine, i've also got a new-ish clutch. what could be the problem?

What do you mean by "cold"......both my Jeep and Ranger gearboxes are stiff in mornings, but that usually starts at about 10 degrees or lower....not sure that's what you mean by cold.

If it's all gears and not cold it could be a slave issue starting.

 

could just be to thick of a gear oil in there. I wouldn't worry about it.

 

Could also be a bleeding issue if it is a new clutch.

 

Mine is hard to shift at first when it is parked outside and the temp is around -15 degrees. I have a Hurst too. I just drive slow if possible and let the trans fluid warm up. Sometimes it is almost impossible to get into gear, but once it warms up it shift fine.

 

cold= 10 degrees or lower.

the clutch has been in the truck for about 10,000 miles, was installed and bled correctly.

this problem just started a few days ago.

 

Does it stop after warmed up? If so, that's it. Even my steering was harder the other day......of course it was -20 out!

 

it gets better as it gets warmed up.. but not as smooth as it used to. is there something internal that would possibly wear out and make it harder to shift like this?

 

Mine was hard to shift the other day but it was -10 outside with a -25 wind chill. Once I start driving mine gets better. I think it is just real thick oil in the tranny because it is so cold.
