I had to replace the pocket bearing between the input shaft and main shaft inside the transmission of my 1994 Ranger manual transmission. a m5r1 transmission. I think the previous owner let it run out of fluid.
While I had it apart, I replaced the pressure plate, clutch, slave cylinder and the seals.
Now it will not go into overdrive.
It goes into all the other gears fine, but when I am shifting into 5th, it pops right out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

 

Did over drive (5th) work before you put the new bearing in the transmission?

If it did, I think what you might have done is assemble the 5th gear parts incorrectly. In that case, it would be pretty simple to pull the tail housing and check that stuff over.

Otherwise, you lost over drive... 5th gear will be the first one to go if the transmission fluid runs too low for too long.

But... check everything over first, maybe you forgot to assemble something simple this way instead of that way.

My guess is the shift fork for 5th is not in the proper place.

Yes overdrive worked great before the bearing went.
Since it goes into reverse fine, would that tell us that the fork is in the correct place?
I have little doubt that I may have assembled the 5th gear incorrectly, but I am now having issues on finding out where I went wrong.
Looking at bunches of sites and I heard a reference to a dot on a syncronyzer. is there is somewhere I can get details on the correct way.
This will make the 3rd time I have pulled this thing in the last 4 weeks, I am getting pretty quick at it. About 3 hours.

 

Well, then that dot might have not been placed right during reassembly... if that is the case, it is not surprising that it's not shifting into o/d properly.

Funny how those little details can cause some pretty major problems.

 

Finally the weekend arrived and I was able to take the end of the traini off and turn the syncro around so the dot faced the rear of the traini. It now goes into fifth.
I am quite pleased.
