OK, so just ordered me some 4.56's....

Ok guys so as most of you know ive been doing alot of thinking and researching here lately and i finally put the order intoday at the shop. I ordered some 4.56's for my d35 in the front.. im HOPING its a d35 i dont know how to check but i took all your advice and i realy hope thats what i have. Also ordered some 4.56's for my 8.8 rear which i know i have. The brand they ordered was Motive, and i guess they ordered some install kits too just incase i need them. Does all this sound correct so far?

Next thing is the install, i will be taking the truck to a shop FOR SURE for the work. I have heard 4.56's you have to do some grinding or something for the cross pin? I have no idea, im not a gear guy, i just want to hear your stories on how well they fit and if there were any problems, i have 4.10s in there right now, so my carrier shouldnt be a problem?

just a bit worried, want to make sure everything will go smooth. Got the gears for a decent price, under $400 canadian for front and rear, plus a few hundred for the install kits.

i had to grind a one of the teeth on the ring gear in the back to get the cross pin in. some notch the pin but ive seen some fail because of that, never heard of any issues from anyone grinding a tooth. other than that, its a pretty straight forward gear swap.

Also the part that is confusing me a bit is this.. the tag on my door says R8 for axle code..

but the tag on my diff says this, and i have no idea what it means lol

V315D

4L10 8 8| 7J06

or something like that.. so looks like i got 4.10's even tho i see everywhere that the R8 code says 4.56's? and im assuming the 8 8 means my rear end is a ford 8.8?

No 2008 Ranger came stock with 4.56s, that code means 8.8 with 4.10s and a limited slip.

You may not even need to grid the gears or buy a notched pin. My 7.5 with 4.10s had a notched crosspin from the factory my be the same in your 8.8.

its not the same because the 8.8 with 4.10's dont need a notched pin or gear.

Did you do it yourself? I ask because I didn't have to on mine. It's a very tight fit, but it works.

yeah i did it myself. it was damn close, i probably could have beat the pin in but i didnt want to have to do that. i didnt have to take much off the gear tooth to get it in.

the rear took me a couple hours but yeah, the front want so easy. i pulled the whole front center section out of the truck and threw it on the work bench. had to pop the balljoints to get the CV half shafts out so the center section could come out. i dont think it took me 12 hours though, that seems high.

The rear is super easy. The front is just as easy, just takes more time. I would say it took me 4 or 5 hours maximum for the front. That's a complete rebuild.

That's good. How much are they charging? Sounds like a ton based on the time quotes.

the gears themselves arnt too badly priced, im paying under $400 for both front and rear Motive 4.56's and about 150-200 for the install kits with new bearings and stuff
