Possible fix for rough shifting automatic

Hi there all-

I just wanted to share my experience with fixing my rough shifting issue (no slipping). I bought my 2003 edge 4x4 4.0 with 150k miles. Really no problems other than a bit of chain noise on start (changed tensioners, no more noise lets gooo). I honestly thought the rough/hard shifting was just an age issue, but my transmission had been serviced twice already so I finally realized it was time to see.

I ended up ordering an ICV, spark plugs and wires, and a throttle position sensor. I changed the ICV and spark plugs/wires at once, ran smoother after but shifting was still rough as expected. I just changed them due to age, not trying to fix a specific problem. I got the new throttle position sensor from Amazon (motorcraft DY968 $10 lol) and threw it in a few days after. To my absolute surprise, my truck stopped shifting rough. I’m honestly still dumbfounded that it shifts smoother now, so I’m sharing if others may be in the same spot. Throttle position sensor seemed to fix the problem!

Drove around, made sure to make the truck downshift and upshift a bunch etc. I’d recommend trying it if you’ve got the same problem, better than just getting a rebuild done like I was going to.

Have a great one and happy holidays.

Could you tell what part of the TPS failed?

In all honesty I don’t know, I replaced it just because and it happened to fix the shifting issue. I figured I’d just do it since it was $10, but nothing looked abnormal except for a little dirt in the hole for the sensor to fit in.
