Questions on tranny and differential upgrades. . . .

I've got a friend that owns a 1992 4.0 Explorer 4x4, Trasmission is the A4LD, and he's running 33's. He was asking about recommendations for certain differentials and the gearing (he was thinking 410 or 456). He was also looking for recommendations on tranny upgrades. . . . and finally some websites where he could find all of these upgrades. Thanks guys!!!

He is running 33's right now. It has a 6inch lift on it now, and he climbs, offroads, and is still his daily driver. I believe he has the stock gearing installed currently, but he wants to upgrade it.

4.10 gears will be ok (he may have them already) and get better gas mileage, but the 4.56 will give him more torque and give the option to go up in tire size with reasonable results.

For differentials info: https://www.ranger-forums.com/forum2...ial-guide.html (Front and rear will be the same as Pre-'98 Rangers, with 8.8 32 spline rear)

If he wasn't going to be regearing, I'd say go with lunchbox style lockers (No-Slip, Lock-Right, Ausssie Locker), but with the regear he's got a pretty blank canvas. How much is he wanting to spend and what is he looking to achieve?

On tranny upgrades? I don't know, but the lower gearing will decrease the load on the transmission, possibly bringing it back to stock operating conditions. They may not be needed. If it were me I'd try to get the drive ratio back to stock using different gears with the larger tires, and leave the transmission alone.

What is his current gearing and what is the stock tire size? I'll figure out the new gears needed if you want.
