Re-gear when I lock the front?
Next mods are focusing on the suspension and axles. I wanna tackle the axles first. The main improvement is an aussie locker up front. Now, my question is.....Should I re-gear whilst having the d35h dropped? I've got the stock 4.10's but was looking to go up to 4.56's or even 4.88's. 33's are gonna be on for awhile but 35's are in the future outlook(next year). I think 4.56's would be perfect for 33's but am thinking about the future w/35's on. I could care less about mileage, it sucks to begin with. Otherwise I'd own a hybrid
I think I found a source to get some 4.56's or 4.88's for cheap so now's the time to decide. Oh yeah, anyone that has experience with re-gear/locker install wanna help? I'd be willing to travel and buy beer(or your choice non alcoholic beverage) and food =] |
personally with 35s and a 4.0, id go 4.56s
|
The 4.10's are pretty wimpy with the 33's as opposed to driving it home(when I first bought it) with the stock 31's on.
|
how far you wanna travel? we are pretty set up here in indy to do gear installs...
i plan to run 4.56 with my 33's, and have zero plans for 35's. you decide :smirk: |
i have the same decision to make, 4.56 or 4.88, im torn.
|
I am going to run 4:56's with my 35's because i got a good deal on a front axle with them installed already or I would be going with 4:88's. If you are going to be staying with 33's i would go with 4:56's.

i loved whooping up on civics and focuses lol, the truck isnt the same anymore.. and i cant smoke the tires anymore either, which could be good for tire life :scared1: i vote 4.88 theres a site, i thought i bookmarked it(guess not), you put in your tranny, t-case, tire size and diff gearing, it will tell you the engine RPMs at a given speed.. it came out to 3,000 rpms at 70 mph with 33's and 4.88's as for the Aussie, i have one im going to install next weekend hopefully, ill try and take pictures for you |
can i have a link to where you got your aussie locker at. and is it a limited slip or a full locker?
|
here is a link. also it is a locker not a limited slip.

locker
i got mine from http://aussielocker.com/ more specifically http://aussielocker.com/item.php/TM8...6/106014/.html $229.99+shipping edit:damn you got me |
.
|
Matt, are you locking the front or back? guessing back
|
id go 456s..
|
front
i figured since i have L/S out back, and an Exploder axle is in my near future.. im not gonna spend the money on it right now since those lockers are 2-3x as much ill wait till i have a solid working point and buy a nice Detroit for the ass then |
if you have any question about what gear to go with, i suggest always going with the more aggressive gear. i went with 4.30's with my stock ~29" tires and i loved it. i had no real plans to go bigger, now with the 32's its still decent, but now i wanna go with 35's....so 5.13's will be in my future with an explorer rear prob ;). so i say go with 4.88's

im bettin fzr confused is 2wd anyhow, since hes runnin 4.30's now :eek13: |
i say 488s travis becaouse the 4.56s will be good with your 33s but when you get the 35s youll wanna regear to 4.88s to get oomph back
|
yup, like said above, im a 2wd ;)

So personally if i had to regear for 35s id look into 4.88s but for a manual id look into 4.56s. But like you said you don't care about gas mileage and i doubt you really take it on super long road trips so 4.88s might be good for you, you'll just kill some highway performance |

jared ran 4.88s and said it was way too low of a gear for his truck with 35s...
he wished he would have went 4.56s and that was before the supercharger. he lived in the mountains too. |
I say go with the 4.56 gears. With a manual you will be more happy with it IMO. If you are wanting even more low end though, go with the 4.88 gears
|
It just seems like the 4.10's are way too tall for normal driving but seems perfect in 4lo. 4lo in the ranger is almost toooo low.
I miss my 79, that had 4lo(perfect range) AND a granny gear. With it in 4lo range in granny it felt the same as the Ranger in 4lo in first. I dunno, maybe I'm just being biased. |
if the 4lo is "too" low for ya, stick to the 4.56s for 35's
