Transfer Fluid change issue

I drained all my t-case fluid and am trying to refill it.I used a funnel for awhile until I lost about a quart on the ground due to the tight space. I just went and bought a pump and it is working great BUT, as I pump fluid into it the fluid just drains right back out. I cant feel any fluid in there and am unsure as to how much I have in there. Does ANYBODY know why the T-Case isnt taking in the fluid?
Thanks!
