running 31's
sure you could.. a 31 isn't that big..your engine will be able to handle it... i was running 35's with 3.27 gears for a while.. with my 4.0L though..tranny got a bit hot.. BUT 35's are a hell of alot heavier than 31's..
i ran 33's with 3:73's fine on the street. when i got in the mud it was a different story. so as far as running it on the street you should be alright, the second you take it off-road you'll see why you want a lower gear.
i'm no motor head/ gear head by no means, but i do believe it would run pretty sluggish with a 2.3. i had a 4.0 in mine and at times, depending on where in the country i was driving, it was definitely struggling. but at the same time 31's aren't much bigger than what you're already running. so i'm not too sure...
well i was just thinking about it and im gonna be lifting the front and i wasnt sure if it would look weird or not with the tires i have but yea i love my setup but i cant wait to level my truck out
i ran a set of 31" all terrains with my 4.0L with stock gears and it was fine. if i stopped in the middle of the road and backed up i could spin the tires even on dry pavement. i wheeled with the 31's and it wasnt too bad.
i ran 3.45 gears and 31's when i first put my 31's on and it wasn't fun. It was not good on my tranny at all, it ended up going out on me. Whenever i would go done the road it would shake like crazy cause of the tranny shuddering. Soon as i got it back i went to the junk yard got a old rearend with 4.10's and never looked back.
I have the 2.5l. I was running 31's with my stock 3.73 gears for a while. It was ok on the road but if I went and playing in anything real nasty I would have a hard time pulling myself through it. I swapped 4.10's in and the truck feels like it is back to stock power.
