Throw out bearing replacement 140,000 miles
Throw out bearing replacement 140,000 miles
So I have a 2005 Ford Ranger 4.0L V6 SOHC 5-speed manual 4x4 with 140,8xx miles on it. I am pretty sure I am the 3rd owner (the guy I bought it from said he bought it from a dealer used) and it is my first vehicle.
I will try to keep this short, but after reading other articles on here I have come to the conclusion that my throwout bearing is dying and that I should replace the entire clutch assembly.
So my question is, would it even be worth fixing? Tell me if I am wrong but 140,000 miles seems a bit low for throw out bearing to go right?
I really do want to fix it, but I am one of those people who don't know when to quit spending money. As far as I know (knock on wood) it is mechanically sound other than that. But on the other side I am leaving in January for the Army and I have no idea where I will be stationed after that.
Would you guys fix it or just let it go and possibly sell it as is

What is the symptom that has lead you to the conclusion the throw out bearing is dying?
I replace my throw out bearing around 100K miles but it was not dying, it was just making a noise as I was letting out the clutch that made me think the clutch was going bad. When I got everything apart I found the inside of the throw out bearing housing that rides on the guide had worn some and the play would allow it to vibrate creating the light sound I was hearing. I determined the clutch had at least another 100K miles on it but since I had already bought a complete new clutch kit, I installed everything new. I also did some work on the inside of the T.O. bearing housing to help it not open up to create the play. So far at 226K miles, no problem.

Does it click when depressing the clutch with the engine off? Is the whirring sound loud or kind of subtle?
You may be correct about the T.O. bearing going out but I think it still could be the play in the guide that I mentioned.

Thank you for replying to my thread by the way. I do appreciate it
I can't give you advice on something I have not seen personally but it sounds like you do not have anything serious going on there. If the clutch is still working like it should, I would just let it go for now. If it starts to give you a problem, you might consider a clutch replacement.
