thump felt during light acceleration/braking

2000 Ranger XLT Supercab , 2 wheel drive, auto tranny, 3.0 v6, 373 gears. aluminum 1-piece driveshaft... completely stock truck.

When I'm at a light I press the gas pedal and I feel a "thunk". I also feel it when I'm slowing down almost at a stop. I've been searching a lot on this topic and I can only find that slip yoke might need two be lubed. But most of my sources say thats for 4x4 trucks which my truck is not. Has anyone came accross this or can give me some advice please. thank you guys for responses....

The slip yoke problem can happen on all Rangers. It's just more noticeable on 4x4's and other models with factory lift blocks like the Trailhead or Edge.

This happened to me once... one of my brake calipers had shed a bolt and the caliper was sliding back and forth... scary business!

I had a similar symptom but it turned out to be a ball joint problem strangely enough.

The slip shaft/yoke on the 4x2 comes straight out of the tranny so it's generally pretty lubed. But as Bob said you do have one, just in a different place.

If you have a two piece drive shaft it could be the slip joint there. It could be be a bad Ujoint. It could be backlash in the ring gear pinion gears in the rear end. Maybe loose U bolts on the axle to spring mount. One or more of the above.
