Tire Locked up solid! 1 mile!!

SO I was on the Ice, in 2wd with my 2003 Fx4. And had like no traction at all. So when I went to go my diff locker must have been hooking up right??

But Then the rear passenger tire was totally locked up it wouldnt even spin, In reverse it would move. But as soon as you went forward it just locked right up.

It didnt matter if you were in 4 or 2 wd if i backed up or anyhting. when i went forward she was locked.

I basicly drove my truck like a crab sideways for a mile untill I hit the pavement and it hooked up hard and started spinning again.

WTF!!!!!!!!!!

What is it the Brakes ? the diff???? ???

Should my diff locker lock like that?

Check your rear drum. On pavement you have some grip, so there's enough friction to get the tire to rotate. On ice, there's not enough friction to get your rear wheel to rotate. Sounds like a hung up drum. Check your wheel cylinder, could be seized up. I know the wheel cylinders seizing up are a common with any year Ranger. Mine has had its share of issues with the rear drums.

thats not bc you have cracks in the plastic around the cable. thats bc your not releasing the brake all the way. to fix that tighten your ebrake cable. or pull on on the pedal.

........

If you didn't engage the e-brake, that probably has nothing to do with your problem. As Rolldog said, check the cylinders, and the drums.

Yep check to make sure fluid isn't leaking out of your drums too, you might have messed up a wheel cylinder with all that mess. Also you have a LS not a locker, 2 totally different things.

then you need to replace your rear brake hardware if its causing problems like that. and how is it tight if you pull on the line and it releases them?

Try pulling on the pedal when it's all the way up.

Or, with the truck STOPPED (AKA NOT MOVING), lean out, reach under, and pull the cable on the side of the rocker panel if your e-brake cable is not disengaging, which I am almost positive is NOT the OP's problem.

Then that could be what it was.

But to be positive, I would still check the rest of the stuff.

The guy I bought it off of said he changed all the seals in the rear end.

it probably locked up on the ice and not on the road because there is less friction between the tire and the ground. put it this way, if you slam the brakes in snow they lock up but on dry pavement they shouldn't as easily. I just serviced both my rear drums right wheel had a f'ed up wheel cylinder and the left one was broken causing the broken piece to rub and make a smell lliek burnt wires. its more than likely your drum man

if you were on ice chances are its cold out, and more then likely you do not use your ebrake often so 1 of 2 things could have happened, 1) ebrake just locked up from lack of use 2) the ebrake created heat inside of the drum then was quickly cooled off due to the temp outside locking the ebrake on until you caught traction on the pavement breaking it loose

So you DID use the ebrake!!! AH HA!! LOL

j/k

Chances are, your ebrake cable hung up because your rear wheel cylinder are seized up. Happened to me a few times.......the shop I used to go to used wrong sized drums and ebrake cables that were too long, causing the self adjusters to NOT properly work and causing the wheel cylinders to seize and the internal drum springs grenade. NOT FUN.
Just watch what Ford says though. Chances are they'll try to sell you on replacing both rear spring kits, wheel cylinders, brake shoes, and possibly either have the rear drums turned or replaced. Just be careful, the dealerships are good, but they like to fish for money. LOL

How long should my drum brakes last??? what about the front?

Yeah I very soon relized I cant drift with a E break good like my friends with a 2d Hatch civic. But he cant go in snow or mud ! lol

Every so often when I switch into and out of 4x4 though latly its been making the vehicle joilt and make a little noise.

Like i let off the gas swtich in and I start going and it feels like your in 4x4 and then it jolts hard and bangs, kinda freaked me out tonight.

and did that earler the other way switching out, It Jolted the vehicle and kicked out...

T case or the vacume hubs???
