Torque converter shot!!

so i needed to replace my flexplate due to broken gears, i have been fighting my transmission for hrs, and today my dad helped me out and inspected everything for me, he found that the small gears deep in the torque converter are F^****** up and i need a new torque converter, my dilemma is that i lost the my overdrive the day before i decided to replace my flexplate, now I don't know if the two are related. Has anyone else had this issue where the gears are screwed up when you take it off??

edit: i believe i damaged the gears by not making sure the torque converter was seated before tightening the bolts.

when my grandpa gave it to me he said it rolled over already so it should have around 177000 miles on it. transmission is a A4LD automatic, I'd rather a manual and am hoping to pick one up soon, and do a swap.

i've got the transmission back in and now it won't start, so i'm going through my wiring to see if maybe i have a bad ground, 11v at coil, key on.

Does it crank OR crank and automatically sputter a bit and die OR do nothing?

it'll crank over but won't even fire, i hooked a timing light up to it and didn't have spark. i'm hoping my coil didn't take a dump cause that bugger is expensive.
