1997 ford ranger

1997 ford ranger
I have a 1997 ford ranger extended cab. When i am driving at highways speeds, the truck seems to have low power and what i think is a backfire. What i mean by that is every once in a while it feels like i hit a pothole with my rear wheels.
It also "tugs" at low speed. I was told the muffler was bad, but i also get a speed sensor intermittent code when i scan the vehicle. The check engine light comes on of course. I read that i may need to replace the sensor which i did and the problem persists and i get the
P 1500 code again.
Would a bad muffler or a bad speed sensor cause the problems i am having? Is the vehicle ok to drive with a bad speed sensor? I really need the truck for work.
Thank you for any help you can provide on this. i found the forum to be a lot of help in the past.
