I am going to get my transmission flushed at the local Ford garage. They quoted me $99 for the fush & 14 quarts of Merc V. I asked the guy at the counter if that included a filter change and he said no. He told me that the filter does not usually need to be replaced, so they don't do it.

I thought this was jus part of the proceedure.

He said he could have the fliter changed if I wanted. That would cause the price to increase to $160.

So what do you think, should I have them drop the pan and replace the filter? Or, just be content with the flush alone?

 

This is just my opinion, but if you would be better off going to a regular trans. shop and having them change the filter and fluid 'the old fashioned way'. Everything I have ever heard about the power flushes has been bad. If your truck has a lot of miles and the trans has never been done the flush is going to stir up a lot of stuff that has been sitting that you don't want stirred up.

Yeah, take it to a tranny shop and have them do it...

As we have a tranny flush machine, and they WONT flush 14 quarts through it, probably 5 at the MOST...

But the stuff you pour in to "Treat" the filter, I dont even trust... So i need to schedual an appt with the tranny place also..

just the pan alone holds 5 quarts......the converter and pan together holds about 13 quarts.....when i flushed mine at home, it took about 15 quarts to get clean fluid to come through....

I didn't think it would be that overwhelming that a flush was a bad thing.


I had my transmission rebuilt about 40K ago, so it's not like there's 120K worth of stuff I'm afraid to stir up.

Curious, why take it to a regular transmission shop? What will they do differently, better, etc?

Because thats ALL they do...ALL day long... trannys, they are tranny technicians...

You take it to ford, or a small shop... they do all kinds of stuff..

Even if the tranny holds 15qts.. im TELLING you, NO ONE flushes THAT MANY qts through the system...

So, the service guy essentially lied to me when he told me they would flush 14 quarts of fluid?

And if a shop only flushed 5 quarts through the transmission, wouldn't people be able to tell that something was up, because the fluid was still dark and not bright red?

Maybe I put too much faith in these guys.

If he was trying to pitch me something bogus, then I LOL. He was like, "Yes, Father, [I'm a minister] our machine flushes out the old fluid and replaces it with 14 quarts of new Mercon V, you know with the Roman numeral 'V'. The filter, which is basically a screen on your truck, is not something we usually find a need to replace. But we can drop the pan and replace it for you."


Maybe I should cancel my appointment next week. Geez.

 

i just got a quote from a 2 folk one said it would be $125 for the tranny flush with the mercon V dont kno if they replace filter. another guy told me bout $80 and that he replaces filter but he was gunna use the regular fluid unless i wanted the mercon V because he said "performance wise, you wont notice a difference" but i still think i need that mercon V cause EVERY shop round town says that my truck needs it

 

Tranny flushes are good, they dont stir up and "crap" either. if there was any "crap" inside the trans it would block the oil passages. also the "filter" is more of a screen and doesnt need to be replaced regularly.

if they were to just flush the trans and cooler i could see 6 quarts of ATF, if they were to drain the TC and pan then i would say 14 is right.

personally if i would u, i would check the fluid for color, smell and texture. if it doesnt look good then id have it flushed with a new filter. but since u had it rebuilt a while ago, id just drop the pan urself, clean the magnet, put the pan back on and fill it up with the recommened capacity.

auto trannies are finicky if they have old, overheated or contaminted fluid in them. if u keep the fluid cool, clean and full they will last a long time. i drain my trans pan (i put in a drain plug) every other oil change to keep the fluid clean.

 

I need to do a drain and filter for my auto. How many quarts should I get to do the job?

 

I took my truck to toyota and they flushed 15 quarts of amsoil thru the tranny. I know because I watched now ford on the other hand would not do my tranny because they said the fluid was good till 100k miles. I raise the BS flag on that one.
