Is the hex head OK and threads stripped, or is the hex rounded?

If you have some six point sockets (I especially prefer to use an impact socket because of the better metal), you can usually get a better bite than with a twelve point. If it's badly distorted as it sounds, sometimes you have to actually pound the socket onto the bolt, back it out, then spend an equal amount of time getting the bolt out of the socket.
When you put it back together, match it up with a good grade 8 bolt from the hardware store,SAE thread.

Without going outside to look at mine I'm not sure how close the clearances are, quite tight I assume. If you can get a prybar against the firewall and get enough leverage to push the socket on, it might work. Getting down to last resorts, get a bite on it with vise grips and break it loose........I can empathize, I just hate these kinds of complications. Hang in there, maybe someone else will have some ideas.

you are talking about the bellhousing bolt I presume. Do like was said. use a proper 15mm 6 point socket (guessing on the size, I just did this but cant remember). do you have any access to heat or anything to make it budge easier?

Heat up the block and the bellhousing area so the bolt comes out easier

Be carefull with the heat, you can easly mess up the alum on the bell housing if thats what it is made of. Do you have the rest of the bolts out? If so it may be pinched a little put in a few bolts to take some of the tenision off the top one and try to heat the bolt a little, spray on wd-40 and let it cool then try the vice grips or socket. hope this helps.
