Transmission replacement compatibility???

I think the truck meant transmission....... I snapped the main shaft from the tranny to the transfer case last week...oops. I have an 03 manual tranny. Can anyone tell me what years would be compatible? There's a couple 04-06's with less than 20k miles on them at a local scrap yard for killer prices. I'm not even looking into rebuilding this tranny. It's time the tranny was laid to rest, lord knows all the abuse it's already taken:evil: On a lighter note, all that's left to replace is the frame, transfer case, driveshafts, and body.....then I'll have rebuilt the entire truck. lol |
haha im sorry but that picture is funny..
any 4x4 4.0 trans should work, as to how you snapped the output shaft, thats just nuts. glad to see your alive! |
Any 01+ manual trans from a 4.0L SOHC truck will work. I found that my new 06 tranny w/ 10k on the clock, has different gear ratios in the trans than my old, stock 01. I hate it.
I don't remember the specific trans name, m5rodHD....something like that. HDs on behind the 4.0L SOHC....but you can use any one of the m5rod's. |
I pulled out from a stop sign and turn right....got on it a little harder than I should have(not even close to the worst launch I've done in the truck)and all of a sudden it felt like the truck was in neutral. I messed with the transfer case making sure that it wasn't in neutral then came to the realization that my truck was dead right in the lane of traffic. haha
Yeah, I'm still alive. I've just been hella busy with work and working on my house. So.......HD or not? What's the difference, I didn't completely understand that post. Anyone know about the difference in gearing with the years? |
are you sure the "chain" in the transfer case didn't break?

There was a thread showing the differences between the HD SOHC engined unit, and the regular unit.....something like synchros and little stuff....lemme see if i can find it.

There is very little info out there but here's what I have been able to find out from the shop manual and other sources:

If its from an 01-current 4.0 SOHC it will be the HD version and be a direct bolt in. You will have to swap the extension housing from your current tranny to the new one though.
|
...or send me that extension housing......cuz thats the last part i need!
I had the blown tranny blues as well.....but i didn't have 2nd gear. So i drove it around for 8months, then dropped the dough on a 10k mile 06 trans. |
You and lefty make me feel special for being able to find one! At no cost hahahahaha!:silly:

I'd probably feel the same way lol. :scared1:
Imaging how I felt when that new tranny showed up with the wrong extension housing. I was like ahhhhhhh sh!t what the hell am I gonna do now. |
Any 4.0 transmission will work.....the transmission you and all '01+ Rangers have the M50D-R1HD.....
I agree with above, you need to pull the transfer case apart and make sure it wasn't the chain inside it didnt break and lodge up inside causing the main shaft to bind..... |

Awesome thanks guys.
I'm on my way out the door to grind some gears but when I come back friday evening I'm gonna stop up at my friends shop. I'll get to the bottom of it. He's an honest dude that runs an honest business and has a race team on the side so I trust him fully. I wanna see the carnage as well:icon16: We'll get her figured out soon enough.....Now I just gotta order new rear shocks(both blown/leaking oil), new coilovers(one side coil is almost completely bottomed out), and she'll be good as new.....til next time I drive it:biglaugh: |
the way i see it is if the front driveshaft will turn then the transfer case if good
|
not necessarily....on an '03, the front driveshaft wont free turn since the front end is the live axle version....
|
i meant by jacking the front end up, and then spinning the driveshaft, if it turns then you know you won't have to pop the t-case open

I seen the output shaft and it's completed twisted/snapped in half!! ROFL!!! The mechanic asked me "What were you doing in this thing??!! Wholeshots?!? I've been working on cars for 23 years and have NEVER seen anything like this!" I almost fell on the floor laughing when he said that and seeing that shaft in two on his bench. Anywho.........it's definitely the transmission =] |
